Why are there so many 1938 Churchman boxing sets?

I see so many Churchman Boxing sets from 1938 and they seem to be very reasonable. Did they reprint them? Are they really tobbacco cards from tobacco packs? Was there a big find of them? Are all these sets original and if not how do you tell they are fakes. Any information is appreciated....Thanks

  • not sure how to tell the fakes, but i am also seeing this. I am requesting a guarantee from the seller(s) that I buy from that they are authentic and asking for full refund if found to be reprints...

FYI... I saw a dealer at a recent SF show with several Mint sets and my first thought was when were these reprinted?
  • I'm smelling reprints. Come on, how many "mint sets" from ANY trading card set is seen from 1938. Let alone one dealer having a few sets?

  • One thing you guys have to remember is that these were released in England where cardophilia (I think that's the word) has been popular for decades longer than it has been here. So these cards were collected and protected for quite some time. It's not like here in the US where we threw our cards against a wall or stuck them in our bike spokes. image

Actually quite cheap over there too. Many non-sport sets can be had for very little (relatively speaking).

  • Since i began dealing in the early 1980s, as a kid, these sets have always been extremely plentiful and rather cheap for the stars and cool pics on some of the cards.
  • I almost won a set this weekend from a UK seller. I have also seen several sets lately and I believe they are all original. I think the set was probably NM and sold for $98.
  • I think one thing to do is to try out a seller and purchase one of the much less expensive sets that were produced back then (be it by Churchman or someone else). If you feel comfortable with the seller and are comfortable with the legitimacy of the el cheap-O set than talk with them about purchasing one of the boxing sets. That way, if you think something's fishy you're only out $8-10 instead of the more expensive boxing sets.
