1958 TOPPS MICKEY MANTLE #150 PSA 8 OR CONVERT TO BVG? YOUR THOUGHTS?

Hello! I am a small time collector. (Due to financial situations, not ashamed to admit it) I sold what few cards I owned to pool the money to purchase the best Mantle I could with a blend of year and best grade I could get. The best I could get with my funds is a 1958 Topps Mantle #150 PSA 8. It is now the only card I own, and I want to make the best with it. I am aware that for vintage, modern football, and modern baseball that BGS/BVG has higher value on Ebay. But vintage baseball PSA has higher value. Your thoughts on two questions: 1) Why? 2) If PSA 8 did the .5 grade I believe mine would be a PSA 8.5. It's so close to a PSA 9, I agree with the seller I bought it from, it might be worth a shot at regrade. I also think it could be a BVG 8.5. What should I do? Who should regrade it, PSA or BVG? It really is somewhere between a 8.5 and a 9. I know the odds of it going up a grade are next to none, but it sure is close/borderline. I appreciate all thoughts.

  • Dude, keep it as is! PSA, in my opinion, is the staple of all graded cards. Personally, I only buy PSA cards. A 1958 Mantle in PSA 8? That is a solid and very tough card...one of my favorites.

You are aware that for modern baseball as well as vintage and modern football, BGS/BVG have a higher value on ebay ?????

I was not aware of this. I have not seen any vintage FB and only a few vintage baseball BVG cards on ebay. The same grade BVG baseball cards went for less than the PSA ones. A half grade higher BVG card might go for more than a PSA one which is lesser in grade, but not always. I would guess football would be similar.

The very nice, probably a true high-end PSA 8, 1958 Mantle you show is vintage, a PSA 8 will go for more than an 8 in any other holder.

If you plan on keeping the card there should be no need to get it re-slabbed, by PSA or any company. If you really want to get maximum selling value for it, then perhaps you might consider re-grading, although a high-end PSA 8 would still be quite pricey.
If you are really positive it merits at least an extra half grade and want it shown on the slab, you have several choices. Send to PSA for re-grade, maybe a 9 will be had. Send it to SGC or GAI, perhaps a half or full grade bump will happen, and they are probably a bit more popular with vintage collectors than BVG. Of course you could send it to Beckett.
Regardless, if you choose to get it re-graded, do NOT crack it out of the PSA slab. Send it as is, to whomever with a minimum grade requirement. You can call any of the companies and find out the specific details. This will cost a bit, but should be the best way to go.

Best of luck with the card and do let us know what you decide.

  • Within the last few months a 1957 Topps Mantle #95 PSA 8 sold for $2800 something. A 1957 Topps Mantle #95 BVG 8 sold for $1800 something. And yes, you are correct there isn't alot of vintage BVG 8 or higher on ebay for FB or BB. But I have observed PSA 5 and PSA 6 sell higher than BVG 5 and BVG 6 for BB. Straight no .5's. Right now there is a 1961 Topps Mantle BVG 6 on ebay. A 1961 PSA 6 sold for $338 a few weeks ago, and another tonight. I'm sure the PSA's will go for more. A 1951 Bowman Mantle BVG 6 just sold for $5100. Soon a 1951 Bowman PSA 6 will end. Maybe the BVG sold higher, we'll soon find out. Somewhile back a 1975 Fouts PSA 10 sold for about $1300, a BVG 9.5 sold for $1500. Compare 1981 Montana PSA 10's with BGS 9.5's, the 9.5's higher, also compare BGS 9's with no 8.5 sub to Montana PSA 9. Try Tom Brady, BGS 9 or 9.5 higher than PSA 9 or 10. 1975 Lynn Swann BVG 9 much higher than PSA 9. For older FB I have seen BVG 5 and 6's about the same as PSA 5 and 6's. Actually, I like both companies. I think they both have good points, and depending upon the card, use the best one for the card. I'd rather have a 1989 UD Griffey BGS 10 anyday of the week vs a PSA 10. But if I had a choice, I'd rather own a sharp 1953 Topps Mantle PSA 7 over a BVG 7 anyday of the week. I think the wisest choice is to pick which company will do the best for the collectibility and value of the card. I thank everyone for their thoughts, it helped me a lot. If I do regrade it, I will take the advice of not breaking it out of the case, and setting a limit on the grade. That is very good advice. I think it would be best to use PSA.
  • I agree, stay with PSA, that is unless you like BGS. PSA seems to sell better on Ebay, Naxcom and in the main auctions. I see too much controversy with Beckett or that is my opinion for what its worth.

Do not dare touch this card! It looks great in that PSA holder.

Keep this card out of a BVG coffin! (Mantle and BVG? No way!)...

    Very nice!

  • Thanks again for the thoughts! I will NOT send it to BGS/BVG. I just wish it was 50/50 all around on front. Instead of 65/35 t/b, but it is 50/50 s/s. The back is no worse than 55/45 ish to 60/40 all around on back. There are no PSA dealers on the website for my arctic ice state of North Dakota. I am not paying a $99 membership fee, plus garding fee to regrade it. So I guess, it'll stay as is. I wish PSA would what BGS/BVG does and just let us common people get our few cards graded. Not everyone has extra funds, some like me, are happy with what little we have and would just like the card graded. image

You don't need an authorized dealer to submit your cards. All you need is somebody you can trust that will do it for you. And honestly with all the scumbag dealers out there, you can't trust an authorized dealer any more than you can trust someone on these boards. Honestly I would trust some regulars on here better than most big dealers that I didn't know.

Also, another reason to not put that in a BVG holder is that they are well known to grade sheet cut cards. Whenever a gorgeous 1971 Topps is sitting in a BVG 9 holder, most people (at least the ones on these boards) assumes it's sheet cut. 1958 is a little different than 1971 but you can see how the doubts from people who know better, would hurt the value of the card.
