Private FB sellers no longer allowed to sell anything

Well the sellers with Private Feedback are getting kicked to the curb on October 26th.

How many PRO sellers are searching the neighborhood for a suitably high window?

    I love this comment:

    Why we're making this change
eBay offers the ability for members to make their Feedback private as an option when they have significant concerns about a comment. They can hide their comments in this way until they are able to resolve the issue. (Read about Mutual Feedback Withdrawal).

Yeah, that's why people use private feedback. Not because they have numerous negatives from trying to rip off people, but because there's an issue that needs to be resolved at which time they will make their feedback public.

My question is, why in the hell were private fb people allowed to sell in the first place? Doesn't it contradict the whole point of feedback on ebay in general?

  • I had to make my FB private for a short time.. There are reasons for it. I had a positive on some baby clothes I sold once. Feedback was "The smell of your young child drives me wild." It took Ebay 2 months to remove that I had my feedback private the whole time. It is actually for cases like that.

Private feedback does not really hide their feedback, if you backtrack their previous listings you can find feedback they have recieved. Just takes some work.

    Well said image
  • Its a good change, but as I stated there are reasons for a person to have private FB as well as having private auctions that are not bad. Granted most reasons for them are bad.

Lets say you have a card listed that is real. Someone comes along and starts telling all your bidders the card is a fake or starts offering to sell their card for less to them. This would be a good time to have private listings.

Say you have a disgruntled buyer like Fightfraud emailing all your bidders threatening them for bidding on your auctions. Do you want that.

Yes it is perfect to hide shill bidding and other bad things but it does serve a purpose as well.

My earlier example is excatly why Ebay allows private FB.

"One down, two to go (buyer's private feedback and private auctions)"

How can we preserve the ability of honest sellers to hold
private sales, while preventing fraudsters from using the
    concept to defraud consumers?

If I buy an expensive item, I absolutely do not want that
information to be shared with non-participants in the
    transaction.

MANY buyers email me and ask me to "go private" before
    they hit the BIN button.

The honest reasons that people want to participate in
private auctions should remain private reasons, between
buyer and seller. But, I see no way to make that happen
    and still exclude the crooks.

The market itself probably sufficiently protects against
any Private-FB abuse. Although, it is certainly likely that
some unsophisticated EBAY buyers do not realize the
    ramifications of hidden FB.

My suspicion is that EBAY is so far out of control on the
fraud front at this point that no solution they propose
will mend the trust that has been broken in the buying
    community.

Remmber human nature is to be negative out of thousands of transactions daily on Ebay we never hear about the good ones just the bad. That is human nature.

How often do you talk about good things that happen anywhere you go?? Sometimes, but let something bad happen you are telling everyone you see.

Most people who run a business will tell you that you please one customer you might gain 3, but you upset one you lose 13.

I hadn't heard this - but it's an idea that is long overdue for Ebay. There may be 1 out of a 100 who have legitimate private FB (like described above) but the other 99 are inevitably running scams.

It's the same reason owning dynamite is illegal- Sure you MIGHT be using it for something productive, but that's not usually the case.

I will say that I never used a private auction until last week. I listed 2 cars on ebay and used private auctions so that no one would be contacting my bidders with either fraudulent scams or to try and get them to buy from them. The last car I listed , all of the bidders received 2nd chance notices from scammers so I did this to protect the bidders and myself. Private auctions have a place on ebay , ebay should do a better job of restricting them but not eliminating them.

I've heard that scam "Second Chance" offers are pretty big over on the eBay Motors side of things, and is getting to be a bigger problem on high value regular eBay items (watches, coins, even cars). Heck, I even put a warning about it in my auction template. It may have some very practical uses over there, but private auctions are still more often than not scams.
