Question - Topps Chrome Football "Special Edition" Cards

What exactly is this all about? I haven't ripped any of my 06 Chrome boxes yet, but I see on Ebay some RC's have this designation, and some do not. Is this a parallel set, and if so, which rookie card would be the "best" one? Thanks for the help!

  • Just a parallel set and my guess would be Reggie Bush.

Thanks, brianwintersfan - I guess I didn't phrase my question correctly. I meant, which rookie card would be the "best" - a special edition rookie card, or just the regular rookie card? Sometimes the parallel version is not considered the "true" rookie card.

And the card companies wonder why kids get turned off to card collecting these days? Football is the one sport that has done rookie cards right - they should leave well enough alone.

  • I believe the special editions are 1:10 packs. Certainly a parallel. What is the best? It's all in the eye of the beholder, but if it was me...I'd chose the mainstream rookie and not the parallel.

Ive opened plenty of this stuff in retail. The blasters are loaded. The SE's are priced 1.2 times more than the regular rookies. Ive pulled
some nice cards. I like chrome.

  • Opened four of these blasters in the last week and had the same question.

    Thanks ct.

Agreed, Topps is still the best for the price. Centering is not too bad with plenty of RCs and #erd refractors. Pulled a Warren Moon HOF refractor, /100 I think.

    No autos. image

DLP is next. Opened some Absolute Memorabilia blasters too, but I think hobby is always better for that series.

MLB really screwed the pooch when they cut DLP out of baseball cards.

Thanks for the help guys - greatly appreciated!

I always like Topps Chrome and Bowman Chrome, and this year now that they put autos 1 per box in Topps Chrome, it seems like a good product for the money. I have 3 hobby boxes to rip, looking forward to it!

Yes, they have a little "special edition" logo under the "rookie card" logo - like this one here.

I believe it's the rookie cards only. They fall 6 to a hobby box, and regular rookies are 1:2 packs. So, they don't seem all that "rare".

  • Anyone want to trade for this set?
  • Seems to be as many SE as the "regular" RC's out there.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

I wonder if there are "SP" Special Edition because I seemed to pull several dupes of the same 5 or 6 players.

And Reggie Bush was not one of them!

I haven't ripped the hobby boxes yet, but I bought some blaster boxes - not bad. But, 3 boxes - and no autos. I got 3 SE rookie refractors (one per box) and some nice mid-level rookie cards, but no Bush, Young, or Leinart. Still, I like the cards, and I'm sure the hobby boxes will be better.

Going to revamp on old thread. Are all of the rookie refractors SE? The ones I have are.

I'm also trying to complete a master set and a refractor base set. If you guys have any stuff to trade let me know. I'll post my want list in buy/sell/trade. I have quite a bit to trade too. I opened a ton of blaster packs and pulled 3 rookie autos back in the day but decided to sell them before they got cut from their teams! lol

2008 Topps Heritage refractors and relics
2006 Topps Heritage and Topps Chrome football

I just checked you list and I can help you with several of the refractors, se's and regular set cards you need. I would like to trade for reds, blues and blacks if them for trade. LMK what you have.

Count me in on trading these. I was working on putting together the set back in 06 and then moved on to other pursuits so I might as well pick it back up from where I was. I do have extras to trade as well. And yes...all the refractors are SE. Someone either post a list or PM me with what you need and what extras you have and I'll check tonight when I get home.
