would you rather have a blast white or a nicely toned piece?

if you had your choice would you rather have a totally blast white proof coin pre 1900 with no haze or spots looking like it was just struck yesterday with nice eye appeal or a proof that was nicely toned maybe not a monster coin but a nice eye appealling coin??

Put me down for one of each!! Especially if they are gratis!!

Truthfully, I like them both! They each have their siren call.

  • I personally like "white" coins, but I have nothing against a really nicely toned piece as I have several Morgans with awesome colour so I'm sort of on the fence on this issue image

    Always looking for:
Irish Coins & Tokens - New Hampshire Tokens
    Morgan Dollars
Coins & Tokens of Rhodesia, Suid Afrika, Namibia & Nyasaland

  • I'd like one that looks just like it came from the Mint. Especially one with deep cameo contrast.

But I like toned coins too as long as the color is not too subtle or too dark.

Nicely toned. Nice toning is nature's artwork - blast white all looks the same.

It depends on the coin. For example, if it's a high grade Ike, I'll take the nicely toned one. If it's a high grade Seated Dollar, I'll take the blast white one.

Nicely toned. Any idiot with a bottle of Jeweluster can create a blast white coin. Few coins are nicely toned.

For me, it really depends on the toning. I probably have a reputation here as a white-coin freak, but that is not necessarily so. In most cases I prefer a white or nearly-white coin, but if toning is evenly distributed, not too heavy, and has nice color, I like it. Concentric circles of color, i.e."target" toning", is hard to beat for eye appeal, in my book, and one of the few examples of where I would actually pay a premium for a toned coin. However, some of the "rainbow" Morgans I see fetching astronomical prices are downright ugly to me.

Ok, lets see..... I'll take a blast white 1878-CC Trade Dollar in MS68, and a nicely toned 1896-O Morgan in MS66DMPL. One of each is always good!!

Put me in for one of each, a nicely toned Morgan, and blast white 1964 MS 68 Kennedy....

Guess this thread does not apply to copper.

    I prefer blast white.

  • To me nothing beats a Buffalo proof with target toning. The one PCGS has in its counterfiet and grading book blows me away. Besides that i'd take a blast white coin any day of the week.image

Nicely toned as long as the lustre is nice.

Now that we all have answered the question, do we all get to pick our choice of a blast white or nicely toned piece of our choice? image

robert in answer to your question yes!!!!!!!!! but with this reservation...... pick a coin series and a specific date if you want to and state which one would the coin would be,,,,,,, nicely toned OR blast white?? and then tell the values between the nicely toned one and the blast white one of the same series and date!! i will fo first.......i wouls choose a monster iridescent rim toned 1920 pilgrim ms 65 pcgs....... the coin would be worth i would imagine 1500.00 over
the same coin blast white probably 525.00 another coin would be a common date morgan i wouls choose a monster rainbow toned coin with all the right colors in all the right places on the obverse from an original bag in pcgs ms 66 i would guess 3000.00 over a a blast white one probably 275.00 sincerely michael

gotta go with blast white-----i've always wondered how a toned coin, no matter how good it looks(and i've seen some fantastic color coins)could be referred to as 'mint state'.
