Coin Boxes

I am thinking of purchasing a coin box with the cash in my Paypal account.

There are several expensive coins which I'd like to store in it so it needs to be lockable.

Could I please receive some advice such as what to watch out for, good dealers ( preferably European ) etc.

In my mind I am picturing a nice wooden box with red velvet inlays....the reality is probably different.

TIA !!!

    That is what I use
has 8 thin drawers, lined with felt, locks and is very cool looking

If it needs to be lockable, it should probably be a safe or a safe deposit box.

I agree with MrEureka, a locked box is not the best security. If however, you want to keep a nice coin box inside of a safe, I'm a fan of Abafil cases. They are made of wood, covered in leatherette on the outside, and red velvet on the trays. I have one of the smaller cases, and really like it. Some of the larger ones come with locks, but I'm sure they're very easily broken by a determined (or even only half-hearted) thief. I don't know of any dealers in Europe, but the cases are made in Italy.
  • Be very careful about storing coins in wood, the resin will tone them and possible cause severe damage. The only wood that I'm aware of that is ok is Manhogany. I've got a Corenet from Peter NicholsCabinets

Gazza, those are very nice looking--I have a bunch of medals of varying sizes though. Are the round, coin shaped inserts an integral part of the design? Also, can something like that accomodate slabs as well?

My wall cabinet is nearing (if not already exceeding) maximum capacity, and it would be nice to have a great storage box like the ones in your link to keep 'the collection' in, and rotate various medals in the wall cabinet for display.

Be very carful of wood boxes, they will tarnish your coins if left for even short periods(less than a year). I'm aware of it happening to some of my silver in a wood and mostly glass curio cabinet.image

Peter Nichols makes cabinets for the big museums and the like so you can have anything you like. The standard cabinets come with removable trays with rows and colombs of round holes. I've had few trays custom made for mixed denominations and maundy sets. He also does trays for medals and the like so I guess they would also house slabs. Personally I break the coins from slabs and lets the little darlings fly free. image

As much as we'd like to always keep our coins at hand, storing anything of value on your premises long term is a gift card for thieves.
