purchased 1000 pristine '59 & '60 topps....

Hello, I am new to the forum and recently returned to the collecting world after 20 years away from it. I still own my entire childhood collection numbering well over 100,000 cards. I was luck enough to purchase an amazing collection of 1959 and 1960 Topps baseball cards from a former colleague who had kept them almost untouched since his childhood. There are almost 1,000 cards. I am not an expert on professional grading but I know that 75-80% of the 1959 cards are at least nrmt to nrmt-mt and that >90% of the 1960's are. Many of the '60's had never been touched right out of the pack (look mint to me). There a Mantles, Clemente's, Aarons, all the big stars and multiple high numbers included. I am interested in having some expert advice them concerning their possible graded conditions and would be willing to sell many of the multiples. I live in the midwest and would gladly welcome other forum members to contact me for correspondence. Ash

    Post some scans.

Not saying that the collection you picked up isnt extremely nice, but often times people who have been out of the loup and not familiar with grading have trouble with modern 3rd party grading standards. The fact is that even in 1959 most fresh cards pulled straight from packs do would not garner a nm/mt or above grade. The slightest bit of chipping, one tiny nick, wax and gum stains, and centering issues account for keeping the cards below that.

Again, dont take any of what I just said the wrong way. I am sure they are really nice, and an excellent collection. I for one would love to see you post some scans of cards to give us an idea of what you have, and many of us here can help with any questions fro that point.

  • Advice for Ash: Join PSA and get the 6 free submissions. Pull out what you feel are the 6 best cards. (Condition wise not value wise.) Send them in and see how they grade. You can then use these 6 cards to determine the true condition of the remainder of your cards.

Welcome to the boards and I hope they all grade 9 or 10 for you.

Thanks for the nice advice. I will attempt (I'm not the most computer savvy person) to post multpile scans of some of the best examples of ,what look to me, like nrmt-mt cards in the next day or two. Ash

    1. Upload the image as a card picture in one of your PSA registered sets, or elsewhere on the internet.
note: the images in the registry do not need to correlate to the card or set. The set does not need to be published.

    2. View the uploaded image , move your curser anywhere over it and right click. in the little pop-up box go to 'properties', amongst the info shown is a URL address, scroll over this to highlight it, right click again and copy this for a cut/paste.

    3. Come back here and click reply (to thread/message). a window comes up that has the text area and just above this is a toolbar with a row of icons. click the one that looks like a picture in a frame (next to the underline button) and paste your URL address in the little pop-up when prompted.

    4. click "Post Message"

Here are some scans that will give a general idea on the quality and grades of these cards I have from 1959 & 1960. I can post others but really would appreciate the expert advice from this forum concerning there quality: Thanks to BoSox1976 for his help on scanning them. I only see the dreaded red X for your pics. Open a photo bucket account. Its free and very easy to post pics here. I never couldget the hang of it till I opened my account. now I never have the red box syndrome.

Mostly 7's. Not bad, if the backs are clean. chaz

Thanks Chaz for you reply and opinion. As previously stated the collection I picked up numbers around 450 1960's and around 500 '59's. I can post the '60's that are more sharply cornered and better centered. To Macpsa who lives in OH, I reside in Indianapolis. Look forward to this threads communications. ash P.S. The backs of all are clean.

Nice cards Ash. I'd agree with Chad - mostly 7's (and maybe a 6 and an 8). Definitely worth grading the HOFers and and low pop. commons that may make 8's.

I'd say it's a great pick up. Very nice cards. I'm sure you will get a million PM's for them. I'm looking for 61's. I wont bother you with a PM. Just remember me if you have some for sale. BTW, welcome to the board. If you need any advice, feel free to PM me or e-mail me. Joe

    Ash,

I'm in your home state. Let me know if you decide to sell the entire group as one or --especially in need of a nice 1960 Yogi Berra.

    Ash,
I am sure you will do fine on the purchase. I would say you have many PSA 6/7 cards. As one person said to grade out the star cards, that is good advice. I would place them gently into a card box and store them for a later date when PSA has a grading special.

some quick advice , get rid of the toploaders and get some card saver I's , the cards can move and get dinged in the top loader , once in the card saver there is little risk of damaging them unless you sit on them. put them in the card savers in a fitted box or with card board on the ends to prevent them from getting twisted. nice looking cards , tough to sell from scans but the corners are 7/8 ish , probably some nice stuff in the lot given the quanity that you have
