From what I understand Krause has wanted to do this for quite awhile but couldn't figure out a way to make it work economicially
for them. Perhaps they have now found a way, it will be interesting to see how it works out.

    Very interesting.

I shall wait for somebody's report on this.

Was very disappointed in the recent Krause editions I "upgraded" to, so I wonder what kind of bugs they are gonna have to work out. Probably quite a few, but still, it's exciting news.

Our very own kranky has a Liteside report where he spoke to a NumisMaster rep at the Denver ANA show:

Keeping this type of info online doesn't seem like a bright idea to me - you could end up paying a high price for your bragging rights.

I guess I'm being dense: I'm missing your point.

As for $10/month base subscription rate, too expensive. My paper Krause catalogs cost far less (I only replace 1 volume of 1600s, 1700s, 1800s, 1900s) each year, and $120 a year will buy 3 out of the 4 EVERY year...

If you're referring to privacy issues, I stressed this issue to the Krause reps I spoke with. I told them that their prospective customer base would have major concerns about who might have access to such information, even suggesting that they keep subscription/billing data separate from the actual information that collectors put in the system. They said that the customer service reps could only see the billing data and only two people have access to the full database.

While they mentioned the "Fortune 500 level security" they will have, I got the impression it was aimed at the transactions between their system and the collector's. I said I was more concerned about a Krause employee who might pilfer data as an inside job.

In any event I suggested that they address those issues in depth as they roll the product out, so we'll see.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Ok, five years ago I would have said the following could never, ever happen... but: If the government decreed all holders of bullion needed to log onto some fed website and enter what types of bullion they owned, how much and then enter it's fair market value, how would you feel?
    Ya - they thought so...
So... If it approaches Krause and says "We need this data to fight the bad people, give it to us or go to jail." what will Krause do? What did the telecom companies do?

Yes that is a worst case, this is more likely: I write software for a living and so do people at Microsoft, they are some of the best. Have you ever needed to go to Microsoft update for a security patch? Software is very difficult to get air tight, with inside help near impossible and with fallible humans thrown into the mix taping passwords to the bottoms of mousepads...

Another thing, Why pay Krause to do data entry for them? It's quite a deal, they get to host a picture of your one of a kind Henry the 2nd gold penny for you... Who owns that picture and the rights to use it? Oops TomB has one too - guess it's not one of a kind anymore - need to price adjust...

Also when your done paying... what happens to the hours and hours of work you've put into data entry and picture uploading? You may easily be able to generate a spread sheet or XML file but nothing out there today will read it. Also if it's like versions of word docs they can constantly futz with the format making it painful for any Krause Import enabled software to deal with. Also the pictures will no doubt not be available for mass download so unless you've kept a copy locally you'll have some more work.

Ok - no doubt you can see I'm not going to be signing up.

And let's not forget: Will your ex-wife be able to supeana this info for the divorce? image

Oh one more thing... what if after a couple of years they decide the whole thing just isn't working out for them?

Methinks we're being a wee bit paranoid here.

If programmers can creat secure environments for banks, credit card companies, mutual fund companies, etc., why couldn't the same be done for Krause, assuming that enough resources are brought to bear?

Also, if you do any online transactions at all (banking, investing, etc.) your information is just as susceptible, so why would the contents of your coin collection be that much more critical/confidential than your day-to-day financial information?
