Hey guys. Metal detecting has always sounded really interesting to me and I've always wanted to try it. I was wondering, I just bought a detector just as a first one to test it out. HERE it is. Could you tell me if it is even worth that amount of money and if it'll work at all?

Also I was wondering if I could get a couple of tips on where to search! If anyone could help a beginner out that'd be awesome!image

    I did my own yard. Then went to school yard. Next, try tot-lots (play grounds).

    That will keep you going.

    Hmm.. I'm suspicious about that detector but I could be wrong..
    At least it's not a Garrett, which is a good sign (forum inside humor image )
    In case you want to upgrade at some point, there are some good detectors available already at around $200.

    In addition to Crock's suggestions, if you have a chance to detect on a beach - that's a good place to start as well.
    In addition to coins, there's a good chance for jewelry on a beach image

    They're good detectors, no doubt, and most forum members use them too...
    ... which is why I keep up my personal little White's campaign, trying to prevent the Garrett-mafia taking over completely image

    I'm with Zot (part of the White's mafia image), but I do also own a Minelab (but that's used 99% of the time on the beach).

    The only place I'd use the one you bought on Ebay would be in the tan-bark playgrounds (aka "tot lots"). You'll be digging anything that "beeps" and it's easy digging in there.

    If you want to go after old coins in the turf, you'll want a detector that provides more information... most tell what type of coin it "might" be and that helps differentiate between nickel/gold/dime/qtr/silver. You'll also want a machine that can give you an idea on how deep the target is.

    If you want one for the beach, you'll also want one that provides discrimination, but you'll want depth too... that one from Ebay won't cut it on the beach unless you find something that's less than a couple inches (at most) in the sand.

    By the way, the one you bought looks a lot like the one my parents picked me up as a present when I was in grade school... used it a few times, but it ended up in the closet.
