Star Wars In-Person Autographs on the Set Registry?

I'm considering working on some non-sport autographs, to be added to either my Collector's Showcase set or possibly the new autograph registry. These would be vintage cards that were hand signed, not cards that were issued with the autographs on them.

Since these will be relatively low value cards, autographed by actors from movies such as Star Wars (etc.) - I can't see sending them through the PSA/DNA service... but instead plan to send them through the regular services ($20 autographed card encapsulation and authentication). Any one else interested in this, or planning to do the same?

I sent in a few already and I'll post a scan when I have them in hand. In general, I was initially disappointed in the way they showed up in my Collector's Showcase set (as you can see if you simply look up the cert numbers). The cert validation doesn't even mention that they are autograhed, nor does the listing in my CS set... I'm not sure how this is going to work. Any ideas?

Here's a few samples: 07160494, 07160495, 07160496

Or maybe I am using the wrong service, or filling out the forms wrong?

  • Here's some scans of how they came back. I talked with Cosetta and other PSA Customer Services reps and they were all very helpful. They actually agreed (to my delight) that these should show the word "AUTOGRAPH" and the actor's name that autographed them... on the tag, in my Collector's Showcase set registry, and in the cert verfication information. I'll post another scan of these three after they come back from PSA the second time. Pretty cool collections, if PSA can find a way to get them into a set formation!!

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like there is a place for these in the autograph registry. That is only for non-trading card items.

But, they would set up a regular set in the set registry if anyone has a good idea on how to do that...

  • I just snagged this auction yesterday:

    Autographed Star Wars Cards

In the past, I was apprehensive about buying signed cards, and only collected those that I obtained in person. With PSA authenticating though, I think I may add some like these to my collection. I'm taking it from the response though, that although there are tons of people collecting MINT cards, no one is after autographed cards? I think they are pretty cool, but hey I guess this is a good thing (keeps the price down!).

  • Hey Paul,

Beautiful cards - thank you for posting pics!!! Sorry I didn't respond sooner, but I've been pretty busy and unable to do anything except glance at the forums as of late.

I have been considering using the same service for some of my MtG cards that are signed by the artists. I know the cards are genuine, but I like the idea of protecting them and being able to show them off in my Registry image . As of now, they don't show up as being any different than non-autoed cards? I don't like that. Please let me know how this turns out for you - if you need another soul to badger Cosetta let me know that too image .

BTW - I know what you mean about no one going after auto's; I would like to keep the price down too (since someday my wife will let me buy again, I hope image ).

  • PSA is revising the tags on these as we speak, I'll post scans as soon as I get them back. I have asked that the word "autograph" and the actors name appear on the tag, in the description that shows up on the registry, and on the cert verification screen. I've got my fingers crossed that it works out - and a stack more to send in if I like them!

  • While PSA customer service has been very accomodating related to my encapsulated autographs, I took a big blow today when I found this out. Maybe I'm the only one who didn't know this but...

When you send in autographs ($20.00 each!!) for encapsulation, they DO NOT send a voucher if they deem the autograph to be questionable. You lose your $20.00 period. Even if it is authentic. So the cost isn't actually $20.00 each, but $20.00 each plus some additional fraction of all cards submitted and returned without encapsulation.

While I can see their point (they did review the card, so some resources were expended), this turns the process of buying raw autographed cards on eBay, and having them encapsulated, somewhat into "gambling" as much as collecting. Apparently, having them previously authenticated (by other companies) or submitting COA's is meaningless... I'm not sure how I feel about this yet.

Does this make it more of a challenge, and raise the bar? Or should I be scared as Heck that they will just keep the $20 and return any autographs that they can't authenticate - because they don't have a copy of it on file for comparison?

    Thoughts?

  • Well, PSA has hooked me up with new tags on the autographed Star Wars cards, that should indeed show the person's name that autographed them. The cert verification screen has been updated (you can see what it looks like of you type in one of the cert numbers there). I should have the cards any day, and then I will post updated scans. I'm still working with Cosetta to get the Set Registry to show them correctly (how I think they should look anyway).

Does ANYONE have any interest in autographed "vintage" cards? It's surely a sector of collecting that's below it's potential.... I've been picking up really really nice autographs from private collectors and reputable dealers alike - very cheap. Even with the $20+ charge for PSA to "authenticate" and slab them, these cards hold their value in my mind! Very cool cards... here's some more that I picked up and plan to send to PSA in my next submission (Jane Seymore/Battlestar Galactica & Vincent Price/Creature Feature).

    Thoughts?

  • Hey Paul,

Nice pickups - that Vincent Price is incredible!!! Will they show up in the Registry as autos? I would love it if they did, since then I could get my signed cards certified, use them to fill holes in my Registry set, AND show them off image Thanks for sharing - please keep me posted on your progress!!

  • Hi! Thanks for taking an interest, haha I was starting to feel like I was talking to myself on this thread!

I'm working with Cosetta to get some changes made, so that they will show up in the registry as autographs. Also, the tags as I mentioned above. I'll keep you posted on how it works out.

I think slabbed, autographed cards, will be really really cool if they get them right. And way undervalued right now.

  • Well, PSA currently isn't going to change how they look on the registry... but they were kind enough to update the tags to show the actor name that autographed the card. Between the Cert Verification screen, the tag, and the set registry listing - you can get all the info on the cards that you need. Hopefully they will expand what is show on the set registry soon... but for now, this is good enough to convince me to collect these. What are your thoughs?
