Two men indicted in theft from coin shop

FREEHOLD — Included in a note found in Justin E. Cote's pants pocket following a burglary of the Jersey Coin and Stamp Exchange in Hazlet were a list of reminders: Bring flashlights, the right clothes, gloves, masks and certain tools, according to authorities.
There also were other listed items. A way to access the building's roof, motion detectors, window and door alarms, and cameras was jotted down on the piece of notebook paper, Hazlet Detective-Sgt. Charles McBride said.

Cote, 25, of Keyport and Vincent Cummings, 24, of Holmdel were caught immediately after the Feb. 2 heist of 100-ounce silver bars, silver dollars, rolled coins and gold jewelry when the alarm system went off, notifying police.

The pair were indicted Wednesday by a Monmouth County grand jury on charges of conspiring to commit burglary, burglarizing and stealing from the coin shop, and causing criminal mischief. They each face up to five years in prison on the burglary charges if convicted.

The 3 a.m. burglary appeared doomed from the start.

After staking out the store the day before — they can be seen on videotape wandering the store and holding conversations with employees — they accessed the roof and entered the store at Airport Plaza Shopping Center through the air duct, McBride said.

A 15-foot drop from the duct into the building caused both to fall, said McBride, with Cote breaking his leg as a result. They carried a flare gun, hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, hacksaws, gloves, binoculars and rope, according to the indictment.

The two stole silver bars, coins and jewelry all worth about $7,870 and fled through the store's rear door carrying the large sacks, McBride said.

But by that time, alarms had gone off, and Hazlet police responded. One of the men was caught as he ran out the back door, McBride said.

The other was found in a Coach Drive backyard, according to police.

"They're pretty heavy," said McBride, referring to the sacks of silver and coins. "You have to be in pretty good shape to get away with that. You couldn't get too far too fast."

All of the stolen goods were recovered, McBride said.

The break-in caused about $1,425 in damage to the heating system, ducts, carpet and glass display, according to the indictment.

Each of the men posted $50,000 bail Feb. 2, according to the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office.

Michigan, can you start off your threads something like this...

From Michigan, this report out of Freehold...

Otherwise I can't figure out where any of that stuff is happening unless it is a major city. You should obviously substitute the correct state and city with each thread. That's only stated to prevent any wise remarks. image

I thought everybody has heard of Freehold, New Jersey. image Jersey Coin and Stamp Exchange should have been a clue as well.

OK, when it isn't an obvious large city such as Chicago I will try to remember to identify.

I did see the "Jersey" part, but I don't know Freehold, NJ. But there are times when it's "Butch's Bullion" and I don't have a clue.

the two of them stole less than $8,000 woth of goods, and then were able to post $100,000 in bail. Even if they only had to front ten percent of the bail that is still $10,000. These guys need to learn som math. If you can afford $10,000 in bail you don't need to steal $8,000.

We had a midnight breakin once. There was no way out so the burglar had to go back thru the vents.

    He forgot his coat.

His driver's license was in his coat.

I sure wish deviant minds could think and plan how to get some of my metal roofs done, how to skreet concrete, weld, lay block, frame houses, or do anything constructive that provides a means.... than to plan to destroy , steal , ruin and try to screw someone else out of what they have worked to get. Guys like this do not deserve PRISON or REHAB. They know where they are headed already.

They need to be sent to where our troops are.(replacements, so to speak) Dressed in AMERICAN clothes that say " TRUE INFIDELS" and let out on the streets of Muslim cities. Those religious folks know what to do with guys like that ! It is a pity that those people who's beliefs lead them to want to kill us, really only want to destroy those among us who are KILLING us with their misguided ways.... And yes, there are coin dealers who got their fortune RIPPING people the same way, except for the fact they are LEGITIMATE RIP OFFS. So it is in every walk of life.
There is never a better time to turn over a new leaf like the present.

I hope there are lessons learned and from there, good things might come.

You need to realize that two guys, this stupid, probably thought they scored $100,000,000 worth of loot.
