    Wow ! They were pretty tough on ya. I have some 86 Topps at PSA now, I hope they are a little more lenient on.
    Did you check them under magnification before you sent them in, or did you just eye them?

    I checked them under magnification. I think they downgraded cards with a little hair from the corners and things like that. 1986 is just super tough and I thought PSA would be a little more lenient. I think I was pretty much one grade off on almost all of the cards. I'll post scans when I get the cards back. With this ratio I won't crack anymore 86 cases. I went through a huge number of cards to get this group.

    wow, nice size submission. doesn't compare to your 86f mini's.... you'd think they'd grade similar with the dark borders. did you use a loupe on the 86 topps?

    I didnt see any 86 all stars in your submisson, Did you have any worth submitting? I know the 86 all stars are tough on centering, I think I may have got lucky with my all stars in that I found a lot of well centered ones, They may save my submisson.

    I don't think I had any centered All Stars. I used a loupe on the cards. I knew most were not perfect, but given that they were the best cards from several cases I thought I would take a shot.

    Definitely a very, very tough year. One thing I think is important with cards like '86 Topps, which seem to be graded differently by each grader, is to reduce submission sizes, lest you get stuck with the guy who's really hard on chipping along the top edge. Also, when you get them back check the reverse centering. These cards frequently have 90/10 centering on the back, which will downgrade the card even if the front is gem.

    1986 Topps is a very tough year.

    When I decided to put together a Phillies graded set from this year [Schmidt MVP year], I decided to do the Tiffany version. I think they look so much better - and it is infinitely easier to find better color, stock, centering, etc. on the Tiffany than the regular issue.
    I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

    Your submission still yielded many 9's WTG. Now I'm really concerned though about the submission I sent yesterday. You say you cracked 'a number of rack cases' ? Sheesh, my complete submission was from a SINGLE cello box and I didn't examine them under magnification. I probably shouldn't hold my breath for any 9's should I? LOL

    It's impressive that nearly all of the registry sets for '86 Topps are 9 or better.

    This is a tough year!

    You never know. If I could have opened the cases first and inspected the packs I could have limited the number of boxes I went through. With the 86s its a crap shoot. Some boxes are great and others are horrible. Rarely a mix of the two.

    Honestly, I think PSA is having a problem right now with consistentcy. Most of my submissions look like ldferg's but my last couple have been on the harsh side. For the last couple years they have been really good but I think they need to internally review the graders that they have now. I have a suspicion that there is a couple graders who aren't grading on the same page as the others. Because of my last couple subs, there are certain sets that I am quitting submitting that I normally submit a lot of in the past. This thinking on a wide scale, can't be good for their business. Is anyone at PSA reading this? Help.

    I just got wiped out on a good sized modern submission too. A 1982 Topps Rack case yielded zero PSA 10's? 5 nice 1975 racks yielded zero 10's too? A case of 50 1987 Fleer Update sets yielded only 2 10's? I feel like I got Zef's stomach punch.

    Well here's the funny thing. If the sports card market were one where the participants operated rationally then this would happen on its own accord. With increased uncertainty about the grades one will receive, submissions should decline to reflect that uncertainty. PSA, seeing this, would then wonder what they could do to increase submissions, and probably either a) recommit themselves to a consistent grading scale, or b) drop their prices. But unfortunately you can't count on either of these things happening. Why? Because there are enough Yahoos out there who will keep submitting stuff even if they continually get burned on their results simply because it's 'fun to submit cards'. This hobby is a terrible place for anyone with even a slight profit motive, since your competing against throngs of guys who'll willfully-- indeed, perhaps even gleefully-- operate at a loss.

    I have to be honest-- this does not bode well. Maybe you'll be pleasantly surprised, but the combination of a) 1986 Topps cellos, and b) no loupe, should spell total disaster. I hope I'm wrong, but brace yourself for this possibility.

    Wow, that is brutal. A rack BOX should produce at least a couple 10's, a CASE on average should produce many.

    Also, Barkus, how many rack cases did you bust to get these? IMExprience I can usually find about 5 cards per 3 box rack case that have a shot at a 10, give or take a few. I'm hoping DGF sounds off on this as well, since he's also pretty familiar with this set.

    I can't remember at this point if the cards represent two or three rack cases. Whatever it was, I went through a lot of cards only to get 3 10s. I can tell you with certainty that other than the ones I submitted, none of the other cards were worth submitting.

    My experience with 86s is pretty similar to Dave's. Whenever I send 86s, the grader just absolutely will not take his finger off the 9 button. It's downright comical.

    In my last 1986 Topps submission, I busted 5 rack boxes and it produced about 6 or 7 PSA 10's (I can't remember exactly). One was a Pete Rose #4 that sold for about $40. The others were all commons that sold for $9.99 (starting price). Seems like a pretty common ratio. I would guess 0.5 to 2.0 PSA 10's per rack box on a wide scale, but that's just a guess.

    One thing I have to say though is that PSA 10 cards from 1986 Topps are absolutely gorgeous. When they are basically perfect condition, I think they rival almost any other card in eye appeal. You go through 1000's and see massive amounts of chipping but when you find the few gems, they are almost breath taking. If I had a few thousand to blow (which will never happen), I'd love to do that set in all 10.
