How does grading turnaround time affect your interest in the hobby?

I've been waiting since 2/28 for my grades to come back, and I have to admit it takes a lot of my enthusiasm away from the hobby. I know that CU has their business model and when I submit to a special, I have to take the good with the bad. But after 6 weeks, I've cleared my ebay watchlist and bidlist, stopped checking my submission status all the time, and generally am less enthusiastic than I was when I was getting my shipment together.

I'm wondering how turnaround time affects other people's thoughts about the hobby.

I don't know that it affects my interest, but it certainly affects my temperament. There is no reason - repeat NONE - that the business model of any of the large grading companies should prevent them from guaranteeing turnaround times on ANY submission. That includes specials, bulk submissions, special submissions of large sizes.

The fact that CU has had your submission for 6 weeks is frankly, a joke.

Yep, the wait does suck... but it eventually pays off (as long as you have a good eye!) You could always continuously send in cards for grading, just send off smaller amounts of cards at a time. That way you'll have cards popping on a regular basis like once every other week rather having to wait 2 or more months at a time. The $5/card special was here for 2 months... and WILL be back again, that you can be sure of! Next time, spread'em out a little... that is, if you desire. Just a suggestion...

Thanks for the suggestion. It is something to consider. I generally have smaller submissions (25-50) rather than 100s, so the minimums keep my submissions down.

Of course the downtime isn't a bad thing. It is easy on the wallet.

I am still waiting on a couple of submissions, one is a Feb special and the other is a Tallboy Bulk. It gets old but anticipation does build. It gives me time to focus on my girlfriend, and when she's not watching, my next submission.

no it doesnt affect my interest in the hobby..

it does affect my opinion of PSA..

45-day orders are being done WAY before 10-day orders, and the only answer ive been able to get from a PSA employee is that there is quote "no rhyme or reason" to their process.. i was told that twice, on two different occasions, by 2 different employees.. heh..

If it really affected how I felt - I would just pay for an expedited service. Personally - I would rather submit more cards and wait longer for the same amount of money. Which is what I do. And I've generally moved on by the time the grades pop - and opening up my package from PSA is like being a kid in a candy store - the surprises are much like it was when I opened up packs 20 years ago.

I haven't seen it written better to reflect my feelings. The delay almost makes it like opening a new pack when I was a kid. In the old, I opened packs for set building. I had a very limited budget, around 10 packs every two weeks, now I buy cases. Graded cards are the new packs for me, set building. Thank you mikeschmidt for summing it up so well.

I've been thinking about my collection a lot lately, as I'm mulling the end of collecting graded cards and going back to raw. In the 6 years or so that I've been submitting, turnaround times have dramatically decreased. But I suspect there's been a real tradeoff involved. I would never want a return to the days of the 3-month turnaround time, but by demanding quicker and quicker service, collectors have almost assuredly sacrificed at least some accuracy and precision.

I've noticed a decrease in 10s in recent submissions. I have posted results in the past with which I have been extremely pleased. Lately, however, it seems the 10s have become 9s and the 9s 8s, so on and so forth. A bit disheartening. For example:

Call it kismet, but my grades just popped. Two of the cards are mislabeled, so I just missed catching PSA on the phone today, but the grades were worth the wait.

I was especially happy with the BK cards, both the Gullett and Tidrow 10s are 1/1, and the Gullett, Tidrow, and Wynn 9s are 1/1.

Here's mine that I waited almost 40 business days. No grades on any of the hand cut cards? Not sure what I have to do there? Oh I know stop submitting them because I am 1 for 29 ??? Then the kid went to the candy store(mailbox) and opened her up and are you serious?An upside down King Bee? I am happy with the 93 Upper Deck Season Highlight Griffey 9 because those are some tough cards and tougher 9's to boot!

I've never submitted cards. My eye is ok, but for the amount it costs I find it easier to purchase graded cards; most times for less than I would be paying to have my own graded. Once I start my own business though(Home renovations, mainly kitchen and bath), I'll have more money for my hobby. But until then, I snipe on eBay.

The turn around is key right now for me. I sent in about 60 cards under the current $5 special on April 1, and am looking to see the grades before I send 60 more. Should PSA not get them graded by the end of the month, then back in the hopper they go.

The discs turn around by themselves. If you bang the side of the holder with your wrist a few times, it will be right-side up eventually. My Schmidt discs [there are tons of them] seem to turn by themselves in the place they are stored. It will get better.
