box bust - 84t football - grades realized

just received a wax box...planning to bust later tonite.

anyone currently working on this set?

I had a complete set raw but I recently sold the Marino and Elway cards. Love that set! Some time in the future I plan on putting together a graded set.

the box is one of the "X" outs. the packs look to be in good shape.

i know centering is a big issue on these. i'm not sure of the difficult ones to get in this set. i need to check the pop reports.

What does the "X" on the box mean?

The "X" on some boxes indicates that the boxes were returned to Topps at the end of the season by merchents. This surplus could be a whole box or sometimes merchents would combine packs from various partially empty boxes to make a whole box. Topps would mark them by placing a large black "X" on the box. They would then sell them to dealers at a reduced rate. I have also heard that sometimes Topps placed an X on the box if there were significant problems with the wrappers (e.g., severally off-center).

holy cow....i couldn't resist...i opened 3 packs...

pack 1 - several "instant replay" cards...4 to be exact
pack 2 - MARINO!!!! - centering is amazing 50/50 all the way around
pack 3 - ELWAY!!!!! - ditto on centering.

scans later tonite...top card and bottom card in each pack no good (wax and gum)...but all other cards are beautiful.....centering is dead on... i think i'm going to stop after 3 packs until i get home. unbelievable!!!!!!!!

I put together almost two complete sets from an "X" out. They're not too bad.

I busted 2 boxes, one was awesome, centering was just way on, I have since submitted several of the key cards to psa, the other was ok, some real nice others not so nice, overall I was happy.
both boxes were X outs. In my experience, x out or not, it really wont make a difference in quality of the cards inside the box.

digi, i'm definitely hoping for doubles. from the naked eye, these look beautiful. color is glossy and bright, centering is great, corners are sharp. i need to put them under the loupe tonite.

guys, i am very excited about this box...i don't know what to scan...there are so many nice cards. ended up with 2 marinos, 1 elway, 3 howies and a plethora of others. if there are any you may be interested in and want to see a scan, let me know. i'm looking for dwight stephenson now...i think there were 2. i'll get the elway up in a few. here are a couple: sorry for the tilt in the scans...the instant replays are spectacular for the most part.

i ended up with 2 paytons. the surface is smooth and glossy, but as you can see from the scan, there is some type of printing flaw, plus one of the top left corners has a ding.

all things considered, i'd say you had fun and got surprisingly good results.

i wish my rolls of the dice on e-bay could turn out like this every now and then as well!

i sent the sub monday of 84 and 85 fb. i purchased another 84 fb from the same seller. i opened 6 packs. the centering was nothing like the first box. however, in the 6 packs i ripped (2 marinos, 1 howie, 1 dickerson, several instant replays). one of the marinos is sweet but has wax stain from being the last card on the pack.

would you bust the rest of the box or sell some packs? i know there's an elway (or 2) lurking in this box...i hope

box has been ripped. about 2/3 of the box was o/c. NO ELWAY.....

cards in this box were like night/day compared to the first. i guess that's the chance you take.

pulled the 2 marinos up front, 2 howie's, 1 payton, 1 dickerson and several of the instant replays. were the instant replays double-printed? i had a boat load from the 2 boxes. i should have at least a complete set from the 2 boxes.
