How many Darksiders here also collect U.S. Coins?

Just curious..................... I started on the Lightside & Greyside many, many moons ago, and am only a relative convert to the Darkside (past 5 years).

As I have expanded into many different darkside areas, I have pretty much let progress in my Lightside collection stagnate - - only keeping current with each year's issues in my Whitman folders.

I have developed several nice trading relationships on both sides, and was just curious about any fellow "crossovers" on this Forum. Maybe some of my fellow darksiders are also closet "Lighters" who might be interested in trading U.S. as well?

You can respond to the survey, this thread, or (if you wish to remain un-"outed") to me via PM.

  • I couldn't vote, no suitable choice available.

I collect a single liteside series. I'm one suitable 1921D Walker away from being done with that stuff.

I'm not about to falsely confess that one weakness makes me a litesider at heart image, but then I can't totally deny my liteside roots. image

Edited to add: Vote cast. I see I'm not the only one in the category. image

I collect pretty much anything that catches my eye (eye appeal), is reasonably priced, or has very very low mintages (and is reasonably priced)
though Ive recently picked up a dansco 7070 and Im tinkering with picking up a (not sophisticated) sov type set,
though I dont think I have the resources to persue the upper tier of anything.

at some point im sure ill settle on something.

Take your Lightside post to the other Forum!!

I voted for this one, but in jest.

Actually, my duaghter and I stuff Whitman folders with US stuff, but no serious collecting of it takes place.

I love it all!! As Lord M says, I'm a Darkslider image

I just came back from a trip to Indiana. I found a wonderful little coin/ tax return shop there. I took some pics of my desk right now to show you what I bought. As you can see, I have examples of all 3image

One thing I can tell already..... either Darksiders are a very well-rounded bunch (just a few "just Darkside" responses vs heavily towards all 3), or most of those that just "go Darkside" all think I should "take this post to the other Forum!"

I wonder what the % breakdown would be if I ran a comparable thread on the Lightside Forum? Betcha I'd get less who also "go Darkside", as well as a bunch more "take it to the other Forum" responses!image

Primarily greyside copper. WWII darkside - occupation coinage, government in exile coinage, defunct countries coinage. I also have a complete Buffalo nickel set.

Having just come darkside, I answered both lightside & darkside. The lightside collections are just about complete, so I had to go somewhere. I've been aquiring alot of PhilAm coins and am putting together a complete set of 20 centavo pieces. I am also trying to complete a set of silver Balboas. The lightside stuff, I just need to upgrade about 8-10 walking liberty half dollars to XF. The set is complete, but when I upgrade those, the set will be in VF to BU. Also have a couple of Frankie half sets complete, so I am putting together another set in PCGS MS64 FBL. I'm better than half way there................Rick

The only US stuff that I am interested in at all is errors and I don't seek those out. I used to enjoy Bust coinage and if I were to collect anything US I guess it would be Bush Half Dollars, but there is a very big world out there why confine myself to such a narrow area?

  • I am in the process of selling most of my lightside stuff - I will only keep the IHC's and the Buffalo nickels (all the rest of it goes).

Other than those two series, I am only collecting darkside copper - I would like to one day complete a darkside copper type set for the 20th century (talk about a life-time project). I am getting close on a type set for the 'dark' continent and will be moving into Oceania next, so if you got any coppers from the pacific area, please let me know!

    My lite side collecting:

    1) Working on a set of MS63 & higher - "O" Mint Morgans (Currently have 17 of 26)
    2) Working on a set of MS grade Liberty Gold ( I currently have a $20 & $10 both in MS-62)

Other than that I'm all dark. I consider the US gold as part of my World Gold collection

I also maintain a couple of sets of Silver Eagles which failed to mention. image

I had to vote for just one lightside series, to wit: US type set, Dansco album. Still need those big, expensive dollars though...image

Yes I have some lightside stuff. I have a full set of proof Ikes (PCGS PR69DCAMS), some Morgans, some buffs and bugs bunny frankie and a few other odds and ends. I mean after all the U.S. is part of the world is it not?image
  • Here's some of all three in one pic, all newps from the recent Long Beach show.

In this case all the darkside is Great Britain, but I do buy a few from other countries.

  • I mainly collect Canadian coins. But I also collect some US and world coins.

Mostly Darkside, but I bought a couple of MS Franklin Commems. and I have a few other commems. I like(the Buffalo Dollar for ex.). I think it wouls be easy to fall in love with Flying Eagle and Indian Head cents though.

What got me back into collecting after a 15+ year hiatus was the goal of collecting a Carson City Mint type set. This led me to buy my first trade dollar, and then trade dollar collecting led me to chopmark collecting, and that led me to collecting silver coins used in Asian trade and the Darkside.

I'm still slowly working on assembling a circulated Centennial set of US coins and a US type set, so I'm not completely finished with the liteside.

I can never stop collecting. While I don't consider myself an active Lightsider, and have parted with all of those coins save my errors and other coins taken from circulation, I do still try to accumulate sets, for example state quarters. But it's just out of habit.

Neither do I find myself buying much Darkside lately.

And a little Irish along the way.

I do have a 20th Century (1900-1999), Major Types, No Gold Set which has been at number 8 in the registry for a loooooog time.

I also have a registry1976 Proof Set (all in PR69DCAM) except for that pesky penny (big bucks).

These two sets can be seen using my sig. line.

Plus, I collect Proof Silver Eagles, Proof Sets from 1999 and about 50 raw Morgans (which was the first coins I began collecting).

I voted "all three" because I'm an OFEC (one from every country) collector. From my point of view, USA and Canada are 'just two more foreign countries' to collect. I do have a special interest in Canadian coins (I was born there) but I don't go out of my way to acquire US coins - they're too expensive down here.

  • Sapyx, US coins are too expensive everywhere.

I am primarily a US collector, but I find myself hanging out here (and buying foreign coins) more and more often. I have a collector's disease that some of you may be familliar with - it is unbelievably hard for me to focus on one series, type or set at a time. With much effort and discipline I have begun to get a handle on this problem and put together a collection that actually makes a little sense. But now the problem grows - I've become hooked on darkside material.

This is going to sound like sacrilege, but I sometimes find myself avoiding darkside coins that I really want because they may cause a relapse. Seriously folks, if I have a hard time concentrating when collecting coins from one country how could I ever control myself when I have the entire planet to choose from?

Light & Dark but also some small, large & obsolete currency, my problem is I never want to sell anything when something else catches my eye.
Once I buy something I can't part with it, I will upgrade a morgan etc.....and still keep the other one! image

I have Light, Dark, and Grey. image The quantity is in that order. I've been trying to stick to a couple of Lightside series so maybe I can actually complete a set some day. For Dark, I'm still not 100% clear on how I want to collect them. I had started France 1 Franc and GB 1 Florin by types. I also love proofs, especially cameos. But as I'm on a budget, I stick with the cheaper stuff!
