New idea for a type collection!

I have decided that, in addition to my XF/AU type set, I am going to begin collecting the most expensive key/semi-key dates in G-04 that I can afford! I frequent a local dealer about 3 times per week, and they had a new purchase - a 1896-s barber quarter PCGS g-04. I couldnt resist. Off went a coin I didnt particularly care for and $100.00. Right now it seems like a good idea - get all the detail I can out of a relatively common date (currently ranging xf-40 to au-58) as well as the best key/semi-key I can afford in g-04!

I decided on g-04 because on most coins, you can actually make out the date as well as important feature of the coin. Thanks for the input!

i love it!! a great plaN AND with great value collector coins that will have a reason to rise in demand

also a good looking set to boot

also important as a type set and as an added bonus a great learning experience and a pleasure to own and search out these coins

i think your plan rates a 5 out of 5

Good idea for a set! The challenge in locating choice pieces in that grade will be fun. I also
happen to like the look of well-worn and original coins - this would also make for a well-matched
set, which is another plus in my book!

Here she is - much nicer and less expensive than a G-04 available from David Lawrence.... and that one is from across the street =P

You're right, a nice, hi-end, G4 still has enough detail on the coin so that you can appreciate the coin. Am I missing something, what was the $100.00 you were referring to.........certainly not the cost of the 96-S.

I kinda started the same thing, picking up keys in worn condition, my current game is worn Morgan CC's, and 21 Peace's , if anyone has any they dont want , lemme know !!!!!

In reference to the 100.00:

I traded in a coin I didnt like in addition to 100.00 cash. 600.00 was the total cost - 500 in trade and 100 cash. I just made that comment because there is NOTHING better than acquiring a piece you enjoy for under 100 out-of-pocket =P

I have to agree with you there.......it's like killing 2 birds with one stone.......unload a coin you're not happy with, add a little cash to the deal, and then walk away with a nice, certified, key date coin.
