Let's play "Guess the Grades!!"

Scanned below are two pairs of cards (cropped fronts & full backs) I've recently received back from PSA. If you'd like to play "Guess the Grades!!" just cut & paste the completed form (replace the question marks with numbers) into your response. Winner will receive a heartfelt "Attaboy!" and unwavering admiration from the board regarding his grading expertise. Good luck! (One hint: all four cards have different grades, in other words your guesses should be four different numbers!)

Guess the Grades!!

1) 1971 Topps #600 Willie Mays PSA ?
2) 1971 Topps #400 Hank Aaron PSA ?

3) 1970 Topps #640 Al Kaline PSA ?

Edited. Bench must be a 9 not 8 if each is a different number.

I'm tempted to call the Kaline a 7 because of the white line on the bottom (all my 70's that had that were 7's) But then I'd have to drop the Hank down to a 5, but the front looks stronger, the back in the scan looks like the corners are clipped so I'm assuming it's just the scan. That Bench is gorgeous by the way.

Edited to say: I just noticed fsjeter had the same grades I put. I wasn't trying to copy him. image

I am editing as see it does clearly state all cards have different "numbers" not just different grades.

And the winner is...still nobody! No one is 4/4 yet! Here's another couple of hints: no qualifiers and the four assigned grades are consecutive numbers (though that's not to say that the right answer is four numbers in a row -- just that the four grades can be arranged as consecutive numbers! Clear as mud?)

    Keep guessing!

I thought this was going to be tough because I chose these four cards to make a point. OK, here's the final hint: one's a PSA 6, one's a PSA 7, one's a PSA 8 and one is a PSA 9 -- now who's going to put them in the correct order!

AND WE HAVE A WINNER! -- "Attaboy" pandrews! Here they are, uncropped:

    imageimage

    imageimage

Like most of you, I thought the first card (on the left) was the weaker of the pair and I expected the Mays to be a 6, the Aaron a 7 (with a shot at 8), the Kaline to be an 8 and the Bench to have a good chance to be a 9.

    Oh well, live and learn...

    Thanks for playing!

the spot on the back of the aaron may be why it was graded lower..

im guessing the 2 1970's were graded at different times by different graders..

You may be right on both counts, pandrews -- the spot on the back of the Aaron is very noticeable and the Bench and Kaline were graded in different submissions (likely by different graders). Too bad whoever graded the Kaline didn't grade my Bench earlier!

    yeah, resubmit them and you could end up with 8 & 9, or 9 & 10, or 8 & 8.. heh..

That Bench looks a VERY high end 8.

My poor guesses show why I am constantly "disappointed" in the grades I receive!

    Thanks for the fun post.

My thought as well. Interesting that the corners look better on the fronts of the notorious black-bordered cards than they do on the back.
