I feel dumb for asking this :(

How can you tell whether a foreign coin is gold or silver?

You can look them up in Krause, post pics here, look them up on eBay, etc....
If you have some you aren't sure of, ask, and someone will look it up for you. Do you have something in particular in mind?
In all seriousness, I agree with the previous post - check out Krause-Mishler
<< <i>Take a bite into the coin and see if its leaves any tooth marks (if so, it's probably gold) >>
Actually the biting of a gold coin was not to see if it was gold, but to make sure it wasn't something else. Yes, gold is a soft metal, and Yes, you can bite down hard enough on a gold coin to leave tooth marks. But gold coins are still hard enough that it will hurt, you may break a tooth doing so, and the marks if any on the coin will be minor. (I know, I've tried it.)
What they were really doing was checking to make sure the coin was not a gold plated lead alloy or gold plated copper. A gold plated lead alloy is much softer and will easily show tooth marks. In the case of gold plated copper the thin gold coating was easily scraped through. (Usually fakes were gold plated lead alloys because copper was much too light and could be spotted just fromthe weight difference.)
So if you bit a gold coin and it showed tooth marks it was a fake, not a good coin. (In general)

1. Borrow some concentrated nitric acid from your local junior college chemistry department.
2. Dip the coin in a beaker of said acid. Let sit for an hour.
3. If the coin disappears, you know it is not gold.
OK - just kidding! Don't do that!
