Consign or no? Who's the best?

What has your experience been with consignment to a mastro or memory lane auction and the prices realized? I'm planning on selling a 1963 Fleer Checklist PSA 9 (SMR $2750), and was wondering what your opinion was with consignment vs. selling on ebay yourself. I have a +500 feedback score with no negs, so i dont think that should bring me down. However, do you think the extra exposure in consignment is worth the 10-15% fee associated with it? Or am I better off putting it on ebay, no reserve, and letting it fly?

    Did you offer to all the guys on the registry first, you might get a taker right there.
    Otherwise throw it on ebay with a reserve, and if that doesn't fly pick a auction house that would do it justice- maybe one of the not so big ones, like Goodwin or Mile High.

    That used to be an easy question to answer, but with Mastro auctions averaging well over 1,000 lots, a lot of things get lost in the shuffle. Mile High or Memory Lane could be a good choice since they keep the auctions small with mostly high grade single card lots. Put it on Ebay with a high reserve and see what kind of action it brings. You can always relist it or give someone a second chance offer. I have never been to a high dollar auction where the auctioneer says "I'm sorry, the auction ended at 9:15, no more bids", which is Ebays problem with high ticket items. At least if you consign with an auction house, the bids can keep rolling in, which is the concept behind a true auction....

    For a card like mine, what auction house do you think would be my best option? I'm pretty unfamiliar with them and what they are known for selling/what kind of collectors they attract.

    If you know what your card is worth, put it on ebay with a high opening bid. Do not use a reserve as they are costly and nobody likes them. An auction with $3000 reserve will cost $30 to list. An auction with a $3000 opening bid is only $4.80.

    If you don't know what it's worth, investigate. Contact dealers. Contact Mastro. Find out their guesses and take a few shots on Ebay yourself.
