Bench looks like a 17 year old on that card. How old was he when he broke into the big leagues?

I believe he was 17 or 18 when he was selected by the Reds in the draft, but 20 when he broke into the big leagues in 1968.

At $2495, does one worry that maybe this '69 Gem is not factory cut? and when graded by PSA, it "slipped thru the cracks"?

I SEE LOTS OF RAZOR SHARP PSA GRADED OPC HOCKEY. AND I WONDER ABOUT THOSE CARDS ALSO? WHAT I NICE LOOKING CARD!

P.S. If PSA admitted they made a grading error and this card turned out not to be 'factory cut". Would PSA "cough-up" $2495 for their mistake?

The Bench is one of 3 consecutive grades for unreal '69 OPC material - a PSA 9 Mays, the Bench, and a PSA 10 Banks. A couple numbers later is a '61/'62 Fleer Bob Pettit that was rejected for trimming. Make of it what you will.

If a tree falls in a forest and nobody hears it does it make a noise?

  • That is one beast of a card. Good luck finding one nicer than that.

  • Just sold a 1969 OPC Yaz GAI 9.5. The natural rough cut was there. So although I believe that most of the BVG high OPCs are sheet cut, this is less the case for PSA/GAI examples. Then again, it is interesting that these high ends appeared after a 1969 OPC uncut sheet was offered via Mastro last year.
