1996 Select Certified Mirror Gold
That long, drawn out thread yesterday about sniping the Nomo '96 Mirror Gold brought up a question I had. Does anyone on here actively collect the above mentioned parallel set? If so, do you have any good stories to tell regarding it? Possibly looking to eventually take a plunge into collecting this issue.
Thanks,
Mark

I much prefer the football to the baseball issue though-the baseball has a more of a duller matte finish, while the football (and hockey) has a flat, shiny look to it.

In football the 95 Select Certified Curtis Martin is a valuable card.
I have been looking to get a few for quite some time and can't seem to get them at the right price.
Nice looking sets.

<< <i>Here's something that made me think of this thread:Every Pat Verbeek Mirror Gold from 96-97. >>
I saw that too, except I found 3 more of those cards from a dealer I've bought from before. I'm not sure the print run was for only 30 - it was probably 35 like football. I know in at least for the football, when the product was released it was thought that the Mirror print runs were 30/60/90 for the Mirror Red/Blue/Gold, but later on it was stated that the print run was actually 35/50/90.
But getting 30 Mirror Gold's of one player is still impressive, even if his asking price is ridiculously high. I've also seen one guy who has 7-9 Mirror Blue Tom Glavines he tries the same trick with, but the few times he's listed it he's also (predictibly) had no bites on it.

I don't think he's asking too much for these at all. I know there aren't any bids yet, but just think how long it took to get all 30 Verbeek's...
Am I missing something here?

1996 Select Certified Mirror Red Set
I don't know what to think about the price, my gut feeling tells me it went a little cheaply, especially considering the work involved to put one together. Having mislabeled the year (3 times even!!!) probably hurt a little, but most of the bidders are guys who regularly buy these cards. Incidentaly, one of the underbidders is the guy who has 6-7 sets of the 1993 Finest Refractors (and quite a nice set of the mirrors from what I can tell). I'm just curious what the set would have brought if it were broken up.
Gosteelers - how long have you been collecting the 1996 Mirrors? Did you just start?

I think that mislabeling cost them quite a bit. I occasionally search "1996 mirror" and I'm sure I'm not the only one. I think whoever got those for $6 per card got a steal.
I also have a handful of the baseball and hockey mirrors, but football takes all my attention.

<< <i>I am surprised to see that the 1997 Select Certified cards have not come up in this thread. I think a lot of people like the 97 better because they are numbered so there is no question as to haw many there are. >>
Actually only the Totally Certified cards are numbered - the "regular" cards and the mirrors are still unnumbered.

Wpix for whatever reason, decides to sell the same Arod PSA 9 and guess who winds up winning for $1,025?? but this time, for $500 less than what he sold it for?
LOL
If this wpix sale was legit on both ends, he wound up getting taken to the cleaners to the tune of $1,000.

Great cards! They can be really tough to find. Had you been looking awhile for one? Do you have all the other parallels in the set as well?
Greg-
Good luck with that. Its one of the hardest cards to find in the set. Someone posted a whole run of mirrors on ebay a month or two back, but they went "item no longer available for sale" within a day.

I knew where both of these copies were for a year. They were both with the same seller and it took me that long to talk him down to a reasonable price.
I already have the mirror gold and mirror red versions graded in PSA 9 in my Seau Master Set.
I had a line on a mirror blue at a local card shop, however it turned out to have a huge rub mark right in the middle of the card. Best I can surmise is that it was a mark left by a machine at the factory and seemed as though it caused some surface material loss. I passed on that one regardless of the price.

<< <i>Say, isn't that where the legendary Mirror Black versions came from? I'd love to hear the whole story about that and what they look like. >>
The Mirror Blacks were in the 1997 Pinnacle Certified release. The little that I know of them is that they were an unmentioned card that were 1/1's that showed up in packs. Of course considering some of what I've heard about Pinnacle back then anything is possible.

I found some on the Beckett.com marketplace. Not sure if this link will work, but I'll give it a shot.

Wanted to bump this thread. What are your thoughts on the Mirror Golds from any sport? Baseball is obviously the big seller. Football and Hockey look affordable though. Any thoughts? Any reason? I noticed in this thread that there may have been backdoored cards. The most graded is Gretzky at 44, Jeter at 25 and Barry at 17. After those more popular players, the pop report just falls to less than 5 for each graded
the 96 set has a stated print run of 30. I have never heard of backdoored versions of it. the 97 set also has a ¨stated¨ print run of 30, but that is not so. there are no backdoored versions that i know of, but there were multiple printings. I think 5. so there are significantly more that 30 of the 97ś out there.
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
I forgot to add Gretzky's 44 PSA graded from 1996. There are also 19 I believe graded through BGS. Obviously over a 30 year period there are people regrading and then peeling and regrading.
I've had these about a dozen years. Haven't really made an effort to track down Baseball or Football mirror golds. Great looking cards. Display well. Great 90's inserts
.
The one thing I know about Pinnacle high-end cards from 1996-1998 is that if you even breathe on them, they will scratch. Obviously, if you can find them with the film in tact never remove it!
I actually like them better peeled. Just figuring out the best way to peel them
90s inserts ALWAYS look better peeled!!!
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
I peel them when I'm ready to send them in for grading. I've seen that most people dont peel though.
i do not peel refractors cards if they have the peel still on them. most of my 96 finest refractor set have the peels on them.
