Question for wax pack experts??

I just bought a couple packs of 1978 topps and found 1979 cards in the packs. Is this something topps did with the excess rappers or did i just get ripped off? Most of the cards were team checklists and rookie prospects and the cards were far from mint. Just checking before I leave negative feedback, because I will more and likely get negative feedback in return.

  • Pittfan, Why not just email the seller, express your concern, and see if he'll give you a refund (prior to leaving a neg feedback)? Just a thought...

  • Sounds like a scam but contact the seller and see what he says. Who is it??

It wasn't uncommon for Topps to use up the previous years wrappers. I know they did it in '71 with '70 wrappers.
Doesn't mean you didn't get burnt, but look at the seal before jumping on the seller.
If you don't have Mark Murphy's book on packs it would be worth the $5.

I have not personally seen 79 cards in 78 wrappers, but I'm 100% certain it is fairly common to see 80 football cards in 79 wrappers, and the same for some early 70s FB packs. There is a reasonable chance your packs are legit, but a good seller will offer you a refund, unless they stated the cards inside might not be 79 cards. This mismatch has happened to me with packs from Mr. Murphy, even.
  • I only opened one pack and noticed the seal seemed a little stronger than a normal wax, almost like they used super glue to put the seal back together. I did email the seller and this was his/her responce.

all 1978 wax packs do have 1979 cards in them

that is what topps put in the wax packs back then-just call topps and they will tell you the same thing-the packs have never been opened.

  • The seller is nealhelen, feedback seems to be really good. I did notice that someone else had this happen to them but left positive feedback.
  • If the seller already knew this (sounds like it from email you have quoted) then the question becomes was this stated in his auction listing? If not, then I believe a refund is deserved, I will watch this thread with interest as I have purchased packs from this seller (no problems so far) but I will think twice in the future if this was intentionally done.

I agree that if the seller knew of the mismatched contents and didn't state it in the acution, he is intentionally misleading you. Either way, I'd personally issue a refund, and I think any good seller would do the same and would be happy to know more about his inventory, if he has more packs from the same lot. Please post an update how this is resolved. I'll also hold off any buying from this seller, especially if he stonewalls you.
  • Update, sent a email to the seller. It went pretty well, Not only did he give me my money back(Less shipping), he also told me to keep the cards. Hard to believe that since I told him I only opened one pack? Oh well I like leaving positive feedback instead of negative.
  • Very well handled by the seller. image
