Five years from now when a few more 9's have been graded the price for this card will seem even more laughable than it is now. Absurd.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

Perhaps. That is why Steve, I believe, sold his 1971 Topps set a few years back. That being said - PSA has been grading 1971 Topps cards for a long time now, and Munson has had many, many submissions. Not even 12% of submissions have garnered a PSA 8 or above grade - so it seems like it is a certifiably tough card. That, given with the popularity of the player, the toughness of the overall issue, and the slew of Yankees collectors out there makes me believe that this will be a very high-priced card for a long-time. The closest thing I've seen to one of these PSA 9s, I believe, is a sheet-cut example that was a BVG 9.

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
In fact, Beckett has graded four examples as 9.0 MINT - but the hobby does not seem to value them as much as a PSA 9. I don't think I need to suggest why.

What's with that cut along the top border?? Is it just sitting crooked in the holder?? It really nose dives as you travel towards the upper left corner.

that does look a bit odd or curious now that you mention it. the card doesnt look quite as tilted inside the holder on the bottom edge as it does along the top..
If you look real close the bottom edge isn't flush against the holder. The top edge does have the illusion of not being perfectly straight but I think it's just the scan. REDSPYDER is a notorious win at any cost bidder, and i'd say he'll end up on top for this one at 7000+.
JUST MEASURE IT GUYS, IF YOU CANT SEE IT, TOP AND BOTTOM...........SLIGHT DIAMOND...........S/B AN 8......BUT WE ALL KNOW HOW THAT GOES THESE DAYS.....LOL
ADVICE....Wise men don't need it and fools don't heed it
<< <i>JUST MEASURE IT GUYS, IF YOU CANT SEE IT, TOP AND BOTTOM...........SLIGHT DIAMOND...........S/B AN 8...... >>
a diamond cut does not make a card an 8 , I have seen far worse diamond cuts in psa 9 holders , even 10 holders. if that card has a diamond cut, it is extremely minimal and centering at the worse point easily qualifys for a 9
Well. . .I brought the picture into Photoshop (link) where I straightened it and cropped out the holder. If you look at the bottom edge of the card, this edge of the card is perfectly level, as are the right and left side. Now if you look at the top of the card, the left side of the top edge trails off noticably.
We should keep in mind that scanners and photoshop often distort the images of a card. There is NO SUBSTITUTE for looking at a card with the naked eye. Just like you wouldn't trust some computer program or machine to perform sensitive brain surgery, why trust these things when it comes to the grading of cards? Obviously, the card is a PSA 9 and that should be the end of it. Let's end this nonsense that can lead to undermining the authority of PSA. They're the TRAINED and CERTIFIED professionals and we should defer to their expert opinion. We should go on with our lives instead of dwelling on this matter.
Fletch> Agreed, but that doesn't tell us much. Would you feel comfortable putting $6k down on this card?
Personally, the cut of the top edge bothers me enough where I wouldn't buy any card cut like that in a 9 NQ holder. Doesn't matter if it's Thurman Munson or Herman Munster.

baloney. PSA's not perfect. they screw up occassionally just like everyone else does, as evidenced by this particular card(in my opinion of course). that top edge just doesnt look right to me. but what do i know...
Scary that thing is in a holder. PSA needs to crack down on the card doctors who submit things like that. If it were GAI I would believe it because those are the sort of cards they attract but PSA should know better.
Wolfbear> Now that you mention it, yes. I do feel qualified to perform an initial critical evaluation of this card based on the scan provided. And I hardly qualify as an "anonymous troll". The scan is large enough and of high enough resolution and quality to show a high level of detail regarding the cut of the top edge. One thing Photoshop is extremely good at is establishing true 90-degree corners and parallel sides. I know if you look closely at the scan I posted, you can see that the top edge of the card is obviously not parallel to the bottom edge. You do have to look rather closely since the seller decided to use a black background. So you have to look at it closely to discern the card from the black background. This simply confirms what Fletch1750 first observed. I'm not sure anyone ever "bashed" the card.
Answer me honestly. . .if you had even an inkling that a card was trimmed, would you feel confident in buying it? I'm not saying it would, or even should stop you from buying it. . .just asking if you'd feel confident about buying it.
I have no axe to grind with PSA. While they are not my grading service of choice, they do tend to do a good job in identifying trimmed/altered cards, usually erring on the side of caution. And I certainly have no issues with the eBay seller.
I'm with MCastaldi, I wouldn't say anyone bashed this card. It is tough to tell with the scan and I still contend that the top edge in question may be an illusion caused by the scan, but the image provided by MCastaldi has me leaning the other way. The seller in question is rock solid, no pun intended. His brother is probably one of the most trusted and respected people in the hobby. If I had not thought Redspyder would outbid me at nearly any cost I may have tried to add this one to my collection. All of this in spite of the nagging seed of doubt. In a reply to the other question, I'd prefer a baked potato, but before you do that re-read the post.

Well. . .I dunno what the reaction of the winner would be. I guess everyone has a different threshhold of pain in dropping that kind of money on a card without holding it in hand first.
packcollector> I would probably say that most of the $2500+ cards in PSA holders are legit. Now whether you agree with the grade on the holder, that's a different matter.

But there's only been 425 submitted. Compare that to 1,600 Nolan Ryans submitted (with 18 9's). There's alot of 71's still hiding out there.
any idea where to get '71 vending boxes?

Think you're qualified to bash this card on the basis of a scan ?
Don't quit your day jobs, you pathetic, anonymous trolls.
Just keep practicing saying into a mirror : "You want fries with that ?"
