GOETZ: Redux K-224 (Warning, Large Image)

Opus 224 GERMANY’S CRUCIFIXION (Deutschlands Karfreitag), 1919, Cast AE, 90.4mm

Recording the powers and forces responsible for Germany’s state of affair in 1919. The obverse is reserved for the internal forces tearing the last shred of cloth from Germania, the communists and social-Democrats. She is accused of her guilt (SCHULD), and the population is enticed to the general strike (GENERAL STREIK). On the reverse goetz depicts the victors of the giant struggle of World War I. France’s Clemenceau and England’s Lloyd George throw the dice for Germania’s raiment as in the Gospel story of the crucifixion. America’s Wilson and Italy’s Premier Orlando look gloomily at the new danger coming up “Bolshevism” (written in the sky). Wilson’s holding a compass in his right hand indicates the tool necessary to cut up the countries of the defeated powers.

Can you imagine, if there would be a cross behind Germania, where she would be confined to. Look at the left guy, giving her to drink from the sponge at the top of the stack. The next guy holding the "Schuld" sign like he wanted to stick it somewhere above her head.
Imagine "IN RI" instead of "Schuld" would be written on that sign.

I love this medal, maybe I am able to get a specimen myself in the future.

    Excellent picture, Scott image

This is one of the better pieces I have seen depicted here. There's a lot of storytelling and prognostication in this medal.

As large as it is, and 90mm is huge in medallic terms, I'm always amazed at the artistry, detail and stories that can be told in something that fits in your hand. As always Scott, fabulous!
