Collector's Dream Updated again

I still think I am dreaming.

My wife was telling a friend of ours about how she does not understand my love of coin collecting. This friend agreed stating that her Dad collected for years and she never understood it. Her dad died 23 years ago and she still has his coins and wants to sell them. I offered to look through them for her and give her an idea of what they may be worth. I went to her house yesterday to pick them up. Turns out he had thousands of coins. It will take me at least 6 months to go through them. In the first suitcase (yes suitcase) I found gem BU rolls of lincolns back to 1954 (untoned), many proof Ikes (some beautifully toned), CC dollars (govt issued), many circulated but key date buffalos, unopened (and opened) bicentenial mint sets (box of 5), and rolls of jeffersons!

I will post pictures and ask opinions over the next weeks about some of the coins and sets.

The best news is that the her sister has the "good stuff" in a safe deposit box!

The bad news is that he has a lot of dark side coins which means I may have to venture into that territory.

5-23-05 Evening finds:

At least 150 rolls of uncirculated lincolns
A stock certificate from the Constock Golden Gate Mining Company (257 shares)
A 19th century type set in capital like holder (not complete)
About 200 nickels (buffalo and jefferson) in carbard flips
Roll of Gem 1960-D Quarters
Many 1974 and 1976 mint sets

6-20-05 Update:

I picked up the second load of coins this weekend. Tons of Darkside material. Many uncirculated Canadian coins from late 1880's through 1920's. I ordered some darkside books so I can determine if any of it has significant value. I also found a whole book of silver medals from the Franklin mint depicting US history (over 100 1.20oz medals). A few US coins (nice uncirculated Frankies). Also many error lincolns and jeffersons. Most are minor errors. There are a few clased dies which are interesting. Several rolls of 1970-s uncirculated lincolns which appear to be small dates. I will likely post many of these items on the BST boards in the future as the owner wants to sell all of it.

I agree - that's a collector's dream. I have had a couple chances to do that and enjoyed it immensely.

You don't even want to know how much you could get for a 1954-P Lincoln if you could ever get just a single one in a PCGS MS67RD slab.

Enjoy. Keep us posted. I never mention to people I collect coins. What was I thinking? Just last week, I mentioned this to a business associate, he said, "Really, I have a couple silver dollars I'll give you." Cool.

I have actually had a patient bring me the contents of a safe deposit box for me to look through (no major finds). My dream is find a really rare or valuable coin for someone.

Be careful. Once you learn to see in the dark it can affect your ability to see in the light.

Here is a photo of an 1880 GSA Morgan in this collection. Is this an 1880/79 or is my imagination playing tricks on me. I know basically nothing about Morgans? Also in the photos is a picture of a 1955 lincoln found in a original roll. The lines are on the flip I put it in. Most of the pennies were at least MS-65 in my opinion.

The Morgan dollar is most certainly an overdate.

The Lincoln looks like MS66RD.

Yes that most certainly is an 1880/79!

What a fun project, and most likely an opportunity for you to get some major scores for your own collection. It is not often that one gets "first dibs" on a collection like that.

Would it be better to have the morgan certified by NGC before I sell it for her? I think it would grade MS-63.
