85 topps football set collectors - input needed

With me working on this great set, I have decided to pull some cards from the set and keep them on display in a mj roop binder similar to the one I am going to do with my 1971 baseball set. Here's the thread Thread.

My idea is to have the key cards of this set in the PSA ultra pro pages in the roop binder. I can max out at 40 cards (4 sheets is max per binder), and I am thinking I won't have that many. I'd like those who are much more familiar with this set give me some input on what cards they feel are critical and vital to this set's strengths. Here's my initial list:

24 - Richard Dent
33 - Walter Payton
40 - Tony Dorsett
79 - Eric Dickerson
124 - Lawrence Taylor
157 - Joe Montana
192 - Passing Leaders (Montana/Marino)
238 - John Elway
251 - Warren Moon
253 - Mike Munchak
282 - Marcus Allen
292 - Howie Long
314 - Dan Marino

I am leaning heavily towards including the team cards of the 49ers (Montana) and the Bears (Payton) as they are both great looking cards.

And a couple of the record breaker cards (payton and marino) are sharp too.

What do you all think?

    Brian,

There are currently 33 HOF'ers in this set:

    030 Hampton
    033 Payton
    034 Singletary
    040 Dorsett
    052 White, R
    075 Lofton
    079 Dickerson
    086 Slater
    088 Youngblood
    090 Stenerud
    124 Taylor
    156 Lott
    157 Montana
    175 Selmon
    189 Riggins
    219 Munoz
    226 DeLamielleure
    232 Newsome
    238 Elway
    253 Munchak RC

    363 Stallworth
    365 Webster
    372 Fouts
    377 Joiner
    379 Winslow
    389 Largent

I would begin with these cards and then consider the following ...

    004 Marino RB
    006 Payton RB
    024 Dent RC
    080 Ellard RC
    148 49ers TL (Montana)
    192 NFL PASS LDR (Montana/Marino)
    251 Moon RC
    308 Clayton RC
    325 Fryar RC

There are other potential HOF'ers in this set not yet mentioned, however this should get you started.

    Good luck! Keep us posted.

Well I will definitely do all the HoF'ers, just to show the amazing depth of this set...but then with 33 cards there, the most cards I can do in addition to my binder would be 7 more cards (the binder only holds 10 of the ultra pro pages x 4 cards =40).

    022 Bears TL
    024 Dent RC
    080 Ellard RC
    148 49ers TL (Montana)
    192 NFL PASS LDR (Montana/Marino)
    251 Moon RC
    308 Clayton RC

I want to have the Bears TL card (that Payton card is one of my favorites!), and I may just clip the RB cards to save the space. These 7 above are where I think I will end up.

'85 Topps Football is one of my favorite sets. Chock full of HOFers and with beautiful black borders. Cards look really sharp in mint condition.

I do like the 85 design, but some of the photos are horrible. Side head shots and fuzzy photos. The 60 Topps set has both, nice simple design and some nice clean photos. Just my own opinion.

i have 2 complete sets nm to nm-mt.....a psa 9 and sgc 9(i submitted the sgc 9 from a cello box i opened in 1999 before joining these boards)....and still 4 unopened cello boxes!!! I have a cello with a moon on front, one with montana on front...and finally one with a montana/marino team leader card on front....

im thinking abotu cracking open those 4 cello boxes and building a 8-9 set........not sure though...i may wait until this set is more mainstream.

Example, tons of photos of half a face on the bench or standing on the sidelines. Good design, just terrible photo selection.

    Lothar-

If you want to sell one of those boxes, I'd be more than interested in buying it to work on sending in cards for my set.

    Let me know image
