The one thing that we share as Ike collectors is a love , and passion
of collecting Ikes. One of those reasons is the challenge that Ikes offer.
Very few series offer as great a challenge as Ikes . You name it and Ikes have it. Doubled dies, triple dies, wrong planchets, prooflike coins, color coins, type # 2 's, clipped planchets, struck through coins, off center, the list goes on and on.
Few people realize just how difficult it is to put together a high grade, or otherwise unusual set of Ikes.
Wrong planchet Ikes are just as rare as 1943 copper cents !!
Many other high grade Ikes exist in populations of a handful, and sometimes a population of only 1 to 10.
I Own many high grade key coins of most of the other series, but NONE of them have given me as much pleasure as collecting Ikes !!!!!

    I like Ikes too. To me they are most fun due to the difficultly to find in high grade condition, due mainly to the size of the coin, its large fields and basically flat and detail-free portrait. Finding a markless example is just about as tough as finding a blank mark-free dollar planchet. image

    Here here! Agree 100%.

    20 years ago, people laughed at me for collecting these.

    The coins I put back then had several MS67 clads, which today are worth about 5-6 times what the same grade 1881-S Morgan is worth. The morgans were around $2000, while the Ikes were around $2-$5 per coin.

    Who's laughing now???

    I'll have my set at the Central States show, along with 3 off-metal planchets Ikes and several other major errors.

    Additionally, I'll have a large supply if high grade Ikes for sale (250+ pieces)

    I'll agree with this too - Im not PASSIONATE, but I can certainly appreciate a nice IKE. At the GNA show in Dalton last weekend I was able to see the #1 Ike set in the NGC registry. It was awesome. The guy had I believe no less than two off center Ikes (Im talking 50% plus) that were absolutely stunning - AND were graded MS67 to boot! It was a really neat thing to see image

    That's funny, as I own the top NGC set as well, and I wasn't at the GNA show!!!

    Who's set did you see, and what ranking where they really claiming.

    Based on the NGC rankings, my set scores 11588, the next best set scores a mere 7893, not even close!

    When Ikes first came out I was already very interested in clad but hated the Ikes.
    First it was bringing attention to clads and that was scary at the time since it
    seemed at any time the whole world might start competing with me for coins. Also
    there was huge hoarding of the first issues. I could barely afford to save any quarters
    and here were people saving bags of dollars. There was also the impression these
    coins made on you; they were horrid. The design to years to appreciate and the
    quality of the early issues was just awful. There seemed to be no nicely made Ikes.
    Indeed, it was about 1977 before I saw my very first gem Ike. This was when my at-
    titude changed and I started looking a lot closer and would actually find gems once
    in a while.

    Ikes do have a lot going for them but it didn't seem so in 1971 or 1972.

    Of course you are right about PKOK'S !! I recently purchased 2 from a dealer who thought they were " unusual ", a could not beleive the toning was real !!!

    I'm a Roosey guy, and I also own a set of Ike's. That was my first registry set.
