Question about 1868 French coin

I recently came across an 1868 French coin with Napoleon on the front. Anybody got any idea about this one?

That would be Napoleon the Third.

Nobody is going to have any further ideas unless you can post a picture or at the very least describe the size, denomination, design, mintmark, metallic composition, grade, etc.

Let's start off simple: what metal is it made from? Copper, silver, or gold?

  • To tell you the truth, it's in a safe-deposit box at the moment and I can't get to it. I haven't looked at it all that closely yet and was just going from memory. I'll have to get back to you on the details.

I guess what I was really asking, since I am very unfamiliar with foreign coins, does this sound like all that exciting of a find?

    Not necessarily.

I just threw an 1860's French 10-centime piece of Napoleon III into my ten-cent junk bin for the antique mall. (But it was horribly corroded).

Many of the copper coins are quite common in low grade and can often be had for a buck or less. I can even remember buying PCGS MS63 slabbed examples, with a semi-famous pedigree, for less than thirty bucks!

But so it goes with world coins. Sometimes the demand is so low you can grab stuff at unbelievable bargain prices. Guess that's both good and bad. The "Dark Side" (as we proudly call ourselves here) is all about value. You can get a lot more bang for the buck here.

Think about the history that Napoleon III coin has seen, even if it turns out it it isn't worth doodly-squat monetarily.

    SC,

We don't have enough info to know if this is something of significance or not. Chances are we will all like it whether it is valuable or not. We're easy.
