First shot at proof lincoln photos with the lampshade

props to MadMarty of course......

but after just one hour and about 50 digital shots...this was the best I could do for the night. Can't seem to get the hint of red out of the pic for some reason. I could probably eliminate it with a photoshop software...but I want to get this right WITHOUT enhancement. Maybe the red is just coming off of the coin itself? Done for the night. Try at it again tomorrow.

Without macro capability it's not possible to adequately capture the detail of the coin. You don't need uber macro, though. My camera is 3.2 inches and works fine.

First, a question: Would this 'lamp shade' diffusing effect be similar to the use of cloud domes?

Second:There is smoething about 'shot' and 'Lincoln' in the same sentence that bothers me. Can't figure out why, tho.

Part of my problem I think is that I have a thin plastic lining inside my lampshade. I'm heading to Walmart to pick up a cheap one this afternoon..hopefully I can find one without. Beefing up my lights too....so we'll see what happens tonight. I am using a 5 year old Sony Mavica (big ol' camera)...that we had laying around our office....it does have macro but the cam is only 2.0 megapixels. I think I can make do with the cam....but I have to bring in some more lighting.

Proof Lincs are the ultimate photo challenge (at least for me anyway). I'm better at catching color than I am the true feel of a proof Lincoln.

this is the final outcome folks. I prefer to shoot the whole slab so that I can document my PCGS Cert. # for insurance reasons, etc.

$18 for two gooseneck lamps at Target - $4.00 for 2 100w Halogen bulbs + one white lampshade. This is as good as it will ever get for me. I think copper proof coins MIGHT JUST BE the hardest to photograph. I think it's a fairly good improvement from the photo that I posted above last week. The price is right...thats for sure.
