How does psa accurately grade crossovers?

Howdy!
I'm wondering how psa graders decide if a card is worthy of a crossover grade when the card is still in the holder. I have numerous sgc 92 cards and it's tough to see how nice the cards really are when you have the plastic holder catching light this way and that. Plus some holders have small scratches here and there that sometimes look like they are on the card when really they aren't! I guess my big question is what do the graders use to get a close look and make an accurate decision if the crossover is appropriate?

If you are gonna crack it out and submit. Be careful in freeing out the card from its slab. You could do some damage. All you need is 1 little ding to a corner and you could kill the grade...jay

Sometimes PSA graders can't grade a card accurately inside its holder. Once they open the slab, they are bound to award the grade you specify or higher. So if they don't feel certain, they won't open the slab. Thus if you specify a minimum grade they will return it with the dreaded M/G notation (minimum grade not met). It doesn't necessarily mean PSA says the card is less than its label claims, it means the grader has questions that can't be answered while it's still in the holder.

This seems to happen more with GAI slabs than with SGC or BVG.

I only leave it in the holder if I absolutely don't want to lose a full grade in the transition to PSA. Then if I get the M/G result, I can still sell it in its current holder, perhaps (but by no means always) for more money than a grade lower in PSA.

If you think it's high end for the grade, or if it's an 7.5 that has a shot at 8, by all means crack and submit. Worst case in that scenario is PSA 7, which in vintage is usually still more valuable and salable than GAI 7.5. On modern the market is different; I wouldn't crack BGS 9.5 unless I was pretty sure it was actually 9.8 and could get PSA 10.

I've never (not yet) crossed over while still in the slab to PSA. What's the cost?
What's the average time? I've been thinking about it lately. There's some stuff
I have that I just don't want to crack out.

EEK, the cost is the same as if you submit it raw. At the top, choose "crossover" instead of "grading." Below, the level of service you choose determines the cost.

DBH, your single-minded and slavish worship of PSA makes me uneasy the same way that Rush Limbaugh makes many Republicans uneasy. It's a credibility thing. You don't want your defenders seen as clownish figures who can't be taken seriously. -- Hmm, unless you are really a formerly critical member of these boards reincarnated as a voice of supreme sarcasm. Which would not surprise me.
