The number of circles below the pearl on the dragon side of the coin is the distinguishing mark between #258 (4 circles, ND 1911-15) and #258.1 (1 circle, ND 1920-22), but I need to have someone point out the location of that key design element on this one (and on the picture in Krause).

This is pre-1909. At least that is what the legend says. I will take a looksy in the books.....

Hmmm, OK. Krause says it was minted from 1920 to 1922. I guess they just used the imperial designg from the Guangxu reign (1875-1908).

Ah, now as I read on, I see that the Republican government indeed used previously unused dies from the Guangxu period.

I like this design. The dragon side is quite impressive without the clutter of characters. There is nothing to distract from the granduer of the imperial dragon.
