"original"-to quote Soupy Sales, "now what do we mean by that?"

recently spotted this coin 1846-O dollar
and wondered out loud, "boy, does this look nice". But until one looks at it in hand, one can't be sure. Is this toning original, or could it have been dipped long ago and retoned? How long ago is so long ago that it doesn't matter too much?

    How can you tell with that picture and the funky colors in it?

    "Original" probably is an overused term. Some use it in the strictest sense of the word. Others mean "not obviously polished, dipped, cleaned or whizzed" (and coins which were possibly messed with long ago, but retoned nicely, would qualify as "original" in this definition).

    After thinking about it I guess as long as the "original" metal surface did not suffer a physical loss of metal, then I suppose all would be ok.
