20 great coins for the ages, other than the 100 Greatest

I just finished reading the "100 Greatest US Coins" and came to the conclusion that most of us will never own any of these magnificent rarities.

But there are coins we can put away now and believe that after 2 to 3 decades they will give a large return on investment, and are priced within our budgets today.

I am goiing to list 20, and would like to hear from others who can add to the group, with grade range applicable.

1. 1916 and 1918/17 S Quarter AU to MS 63

2. 1914-D cent MS 62 and above

3. 1896-S and 1913-S Quarter AU and higher

4. 1877 cent, MS 60 and higher

5. 1896-O and 1904-S Barber half Au 55 and higher

6. 1795 half XF and higher

7. 1795 FH dollar, XF and higher

8. 1815/2 half XF and higher

9. 1839 NO Drapery quarter and half AU 53 and higher

10. 1855-S half, AU

11. 1893-S dollar, AU

12. 1921-S dollar, MS 65

13. 1885 1886 and 12-S Lib nickel, MS 64 or better

14. 1896 Lib nickel, MS 65 or better

15. 1895-O dime any grade

16. 1796 quarter, any grade

17. 1901-S quarter any grade

18. 1799 cent any grade

19. 1795 half, 3 leaves, any grade

20. 1794 dollar, any grade

I have not included any patterns, colonials, or moderns(after 1965). Each of these areas deserve mention for long term growth, and would love to hear from those who are familiar with the denominations and grades that should be included.

If I have listed any of the 100 Greatest, excuse my limited abilities at recall. It was over 2 hours ago that I read the book.

I found it interesting no IHC was on the 100 list. The two authors basically picked their OWN bottom 90 after they had generated other opinions on what were the top ten. The 1877 or the 1864 L on Rib proof should have been in there, IMO.

Is this a book? Artical? Post? ...that you're talking about?

I'm working on a similar collection to the "box of twenty" stratigy. So far I have four biggies (for me) with numberous "side" coins. Here is the list of coins that I would ultimatly like to have:

1799 or 1804 Large cent w/ full rims and no problems G or better
    1877 Indian AU55 or better (idealy 63/64 bn/rb)
    1909-S VDB MS64BN or better
1877 Three Cent Nickel PR65 or better
1880 Shield Nickel AU55 or better
    1885 V-Nickel MS64
    1913-S T2 MS64 or 1914-D MS65-66 or 1937-D Three legger AU58-64
    1895-O Barber Dime G-XF45
    1916-D Merc VG10-XF45
1913-S or 1896-S Barber Quarter in full rim G or better
    1916 Standing Liberty Quarter XF45-AU55
    1932-D Quarter AU55-MS63
    1921-S Walker F15-VF25
    1950 Franklin PR66-67
    1893-S Morgan VG10-XF45
    1921 Peace MS64

It will be quite some time before I get them all... if ever. I have made
    some progress, however.

    Re the author's #12 pick:

I wouldn't put the 1921-S Dollar on my list. Unattractive examples abound and the potential for larger numbers in MS65 is certainly there. (Huge mintage, missed the Pittman melt-down, lots of MS64's). If you wanted a different dollar on the list, I would suggest 1893-O or 1895-S in XF-AU or better. Many CC's are more popular, but not nearly as rare.
