Now here's a Counterstamp for you!!

And from Fred Weinberg, no less: 1980 Bicentaler Counterstamp on Maria Theresa Thaler (by Mel Wacks). Is this the guy we get "wacky" from? I haven't decided if I like it or not.

I have yet to purchase a Maria Thersesa Thaler; the coin doesn't appeal to me visually and a commemorative counterstamp doesn't add to its appeal.

Odd. At least they're common coins he does it to...

Speaking of counterstamps though.. it's close enough to chopmarks for me to hijack by entering this link from the Currency board. They're talking about stamps on $100 notes which resemble chopmarks. Kind of neat, and not something I'd noticed before.

Would this actually qualify as a counterstamp? The "counterstamp" appears to me to be part of the obverse die. Notice that there is no distortion of the reverse design as there normally would be on a counterstamped coin. Of course, there is also the frosted devices in the "counterstamp". Never seen that in a true counterstamped coin either. image

I was wondering about that too.. but he's also selling proof Ikes with stamps (ex). It looks fairly unmolested on the obv, except for a faint tarnish circle around the head?? image

Actually, I would call it a commemorative medal since it was made as such. It certainly isn't an error or "post-mint" product.

I kind of like it too. I wouldn't buy it, but I like it.

    Make sense?
