Would You Buy This Card ???????

Just saw this auction from Andy Madec, where he has written "recolored" on the back of a ex minus 1953 Mantle. I have seen various discussions on this Board regarding altered and trimmed cards, and my personal opinion has been, to destroy them. Some members have said they would not mind owning a trimmed or altered card.

Having said that, would you destroy this card since it has been altered, or is allowable to mark the card as recolored and offer it for sale, or just grade it as authentic and not mark the back of the card?

Kudos to Andy for doing the right thing. This will probably cost him a few $'s but it keeps someone like PRo from grading this card, or worse someone tryingto sell it raw to an unsuspecting collector....

"This is a recolored 1953 Topps Mickey Mantle. This blatant recoloring job is on the red border of the card. We have written "recolored" on the back of this card, so this card is being sold as a recolored card. Other than the recoloring this card would grade out at VG-EX with nice eye appeal."

Obviously, the better way to go on this would have been to state something like: "This is a gorgeous beauty, worth over $33,000 in mint condition. I'm not a specialist and I don't grade cards, but this will be an incredible addition to any collection. I've been told that there might be a question regarding the color on a portion of this card, so I'm selling it as is."

Clearly in this case all the known facts/opinions have been disclosed.
The seller has taken the length to permanently pass along these facts/opinions to not just the next owner but to all future owners to the best of his ability. I see nothing wrong with this at all and applaud the honesty.
Would I buy it ? no.

Yeah, I'd buy it. Not for a lot, but I'd love to just be able to handle it and look it over. It would look great framed with an autograph for display purposes too.

I could never bring myself to destroying a 1953 Mantle so I think he did the right thing. I would buy it also, but not for much. The honesty that he has portrayed in this auction will come back to him 10 fold in the future. This builds confidence of potential future bidders.

Andy did the right thing here... I applaud his actions! Unfortunately, Dr. Stain could easily remove the pen writing from the back, the butchered recoloring on the front and restore this to a PRO 10 state... given that, I think deep down I wish he'd simply puched a hole in the card rather than write on it.

I may buy it if the price is right - just to have it. As Dhjacks suggested, it would look cool framed or on a plaque. Total disclosure on the part of the seller makes it OK IMO. Hopefully, nobody would go through the extent of effort required to restore/doctor it and pass it off .

It's actually pretty clear that's been recolored when you see the front scan. The spots are more red than the rest.

I actually have a bunch of 1954 topps hockey that has come back trimmed or recolored

. I've thought about putting them on ebay and letting the bidders know that they are all trimmed and recolored. I want to sell them to at least recover part of my money. The thing I am worried about is a bad guy bidding on them so he can send the to Pro to rip everyone off. I was thinking of putting a disclaimer there saying "if you sell pro graded cards or have negative feeback for selling altered cards, or have private feedback you are not allowed to bid. If you do bid, your bid will be cancelled and you will be reported to ebay. If you use a bidsniping service and are a bidder that is not allowed, your bid is null and void and you will be reported to ebay." How would that sound to you guys? I really hate throwing old cards out. I'm sure there are people that just want these cards and don't care that they have been trimmed. I also get some of my money back, albeit a very small amount of my money back.

I just thought about it. Who is to say that the person buying doesn't just send the card as is to Pro. I doubt Pro would care if it says recolored on the back. They start a new auction, only scan the front, then sell to an unsuspecting bidder. The bidder sees it, demands a refund, and this seller responds 'sorry, not refunds on graded cards" he is doing the right thing, but that still won't stop someone from reselling to an unsuspecting buyer. I think PSA should grade trimmed and altered cards and have the flip clearly say trimmed or recolored.
