Im new to these forums and need help

1868 was a busy year for business strike dies. I imagine there were a lot of cud problems as dies wore out. The QA then wasnt quite what it is now. That makes for lots of interesting coins, but probably not much extra value because of the cud error.

Look for interesting evidence of clashed dies (lots of them that year) and repunched dates.

I am wondering if anyone here is good with 3 cent nickel pieces. If so have you heard of a rev cud error on an 1868 piece? does this error change the value of the coin alot? thanks

coinfreak499, it absolute helps the value. Cuds on 3 cent nickels are more common than on other coins, but they are still worth a premium. Three cent nickels were struck on hard planchets (nickel) and the dies were heavily used, hence the cuds. How much of a premium depends on the extent of the cud. For example, if the reverse is covered by 25% or more with a cud, then you have something worth substantially more than if it did not have a cud. A small cud may only add $5 or so to the value.

Get a digital camera with macro focusing. Until then, you can use a scanner. Placing it on the bed of the scanner at a slight angle sometimes helps due to the reflectivity. Use a low resolution, and save the file in .jpg format (50 kB maximum), otherwise, you can't post it here.

Although you should image both sides of the coin, crop out the slab info (if it's in a slab), and join them together, here's a pic I did with my scanner (before it broke, so I can't image both sides now):
