I was just wondering because I remember a figure of about $10.00 but don't know where I saw it. These 1966 10 shillings have been going pretty high on Ebay as of late even for the poor examples. People are fighting tooth and nail for them but I will not pay $15-20 for a 10 shilling other than a proof shilling and even then some sellers are not selling them as a set which they were designed to be sold as.
These coins exist with the edge legend in both directions, there does not appear to be a scarcer variety or any collector interest in the varieties except that a proof pair should consist of two coins with opposite edge orientations.

Sorry, I was just thinking out loudimage I was just amazed by the madness.

As Lloyd said, these are great looking coins with low mintages and are popular everywhere.
Since they are silver it makes them much more attractive to many collectors. They also have
a tendency to develop some great toning.

In the past they were available pretty cheaply but I'd guess that the distribution of these is
much more scattered than many modern world coins which tend to be mostly in this country.

I guess it's true I just haven't been watching. About a month or so ago you could pick on of these buggers up for a song. I have two very sweet BU examples. One I picked off ebay for $11.00 a few weeks ago. I was just amazed at what people were paying for even poor, scratched up, bad examples. Oh well....live and learnimage

Tis true! Uk material not withstanding....even Spinks is getting woefully in arrears on many issues.

Anyway, most of the 19th and early 20th c. Swiss Federal stuff will run 50-100% over Krause for solid, no questions, MS66 and up pieces. The WWII silver issues in Specimen (first strikes) are only about 20% over the Krause list (for PCGS SP67 and up) and in some cases I can easily obtain 40%+ under Krause for SP64-65 material. I don't buy those kind of coins though.

Pre-WWII Specimens are another matter entirely. They quote a value of $900 for a 1911 1 franc SP.....HELLO (actually, those Specimen are all over the map relative to the actual market)? If I were so disposed, I could have trumpeted that Krause price and eventually sold an NGC SP67 which I had certified to some poor soul that likes to thump the book (could have made them a deal at 70% of Kr.), but the wholesale market value on that coin was about $400 including the slab extortion fee, and it sold to a knowledgeable collector for about $450.....so, go figure.

Lloyd, what would a crown collector pay for a Churchill "freak" grading AS, Superb FDC? Say, something PCGS would slab as an MS68? I know Cladking would love to find one!! image

Sadly, what Krause lists as a price is not related to what the coin is going for these days. (as Lloyd said)
If you ever get a chance, I would recommend picking up a 2-coin set. There were very very few of these made and they display both sides of the coin. The writing around the edge is reversed so as the coins are presented (one obv up, one rev up) the writing on both edges is right-side-up. (price >$100)

From the 2004 British Coins Market Values price guide: £7.50 UNC, £15 proof.

    Still seems woefully behind reality.

    Nice set, John.
  • Thank you Mac.
I kept my eyes open for almost three years looking for a two-coin set and this was the first one I have ever seen, luckily it was for sale and I bought it. Most dealers and collectors I talked to either had never heard of the two-coin set, or thought it was just a rumor.
