<< <i>Is it ethical to metal detect in a graveyard? I guess so, but I wouldn't do it. >>
I used to metal detect years ago, and did try an old graveyard about 15 years ago. I felt rather uncomfortable the whole time, and after digging up a a small black sack filled with 27 sewing needles which was surrounded by a like number of pennies, I jumped in the car and never looked back. Pretty creepy, especially in the middle of the night.
Collector of Fractional Gold; gold tokens from Canada, California, Alaska & other states; gold so-called dollars, and other oddball stuff.

Looks like a damaged planchet or slug. I can't imagine what it was doing in a graveyard.

<< <i>Dunno. I'll defer to Aethelred on this one.
So this is the kind of scrap I get while you answer all of the cool Roman coin questions? I see how you work!
To me it looks like a colonial era flat button of the type used from about 1750-1830.

<< <i>So, what did they do? Have a jeweler or silversmith solder a hoop onto the back of the 'button'? >>
There were hoops attached to the back of this type of button, but they are often found without the hoop.
