Northern Mariana Island coin

Hello,

Recently heard that The Department of the Interior said it will investigate the legality of the issue of coins ($5 denomination) from Northern Mariana Islands.

Anyone has any further info on this ?

Not sure if the coin I purchased is a "real" coin or not ,......

Thanks
:)

The Northern Mariana Islands is a US commonwealth whose self-governing rights extend only to domestic affairs. The US dollar is legal tender there, and the commonwealth's government does not have any more authority to issue coins that Puerto Rico's does. That's why they put "legal tender" in quotes in the ad.
  • Is this similar to the American Samoa coin issues then ? Or, Palau for that matter ?

    Thanks

Palau is an independent country and has the sovereign right to issue coinage. American Samoa is a US territory, so the same rules apply as would apply to any US state -- the Constitution says they can't issue their own coins.
  • Thanks for the info newsman ! Have to see if Krause lists these "coins" in their catalog; since they list the American Samoa ones, I am assuming they will show up.

    That's interesting!

Hmm.. I have a sort of related question.. couldn't they just call it a trade dollar? That'd reduce it to token status but it would sound cooler image

I don't know any of the specifics regarding the law in this area image

A few years back, there were a couple of guys who bought up a bunch with the intention of getting them redeemed on their next visit. Word got out and the government panicked and limited conversion to one coin per person per day.image

  • Read on the web that there was an article in "Coin World" to this effect. Does anyone know if this article shed any further light on this issue ? Who authorised minting these "coins" ??

Since I collect coin/country, want to figure out for certain whether this coin really increases my country count image

Askari, that was the Marshall Islands not Nothern Mariana Islands or American Samoa. Oh and NMI is now granted "legal tender" status to an issueance of those gold plated 1933 double eagle knock offs. These don't say coppy, instead they have the coat of arms for NMI stamed into the sun.
