I am shocked at this auction

I am really shocked at this auction and the price this coin is closing at. I have two of these one in a case and one not. The one in the case cost me $9.95 and is same coin as this auction right down to the Certificate. There are quite a few of these pieces around and are very common. I am just shocked at the number of bids and the priceimage

Strange indeed. High bidder has ZERO history, but there were others.
This auction just closed, same coin, $14.50 opening bid and ZERO bidders.

  • Here's the bid history.
Even more strange...why would joeslimo--who seems to be selling lots of coins and must know at least something about values--bid $131.66?
I can understand a 2-day old ebay user incrementally bidding every 10 seconds as he tries to pass an existing high bid. But a long time user also just as uniformed about value? Looks like philrun3 was the only one with some common sense.

Just to show it's not a phenomenon unique to shipwreck coins, here's one that's already way over its head: Soviet art deco medal. Although attractive, this isn't a rare medal and can usually be had for less than $20. In fact, another nice example of this Phys Ed & Sports medal a starting price of $19.95 recently garnered no bids at all. I'm surprised to see Agbelts bidding so high as he's a proficient bidder on medals; perhaps he's unfamiliar with Soviet medals.

People collude and shill bid stuff on eBay all the time to establish artificial price levels for items. Why they'd try on such a common item as this, I don't know.

Of course one cannot underestimate the power of stupid people in groups. image

I would sell mine in a heartbeat for that price. Strange goings on lately on E of Bay.
