Family, kids, coins, sports (playing not watching), jet skiing, wakeboarding, Big Air....no one ever got hurt in the air....its the sudden stop that hurts. I hate Hurricane Sandy. I hate FEMA and i hate the blasted insurance companies.
Pretty coin Russ! I am about to be the proud owner of my first two toned Jeffs...both proofs I won on Teletrade for pretty darn cheap. (Of course, some would probably think I paid too much. I tend not to pay much attention to how much stuff like that generally goes for, since most of it is out of my budget. Actually, I think there's another thread buried in this parenthetical statement...)
Anyway, here they are. After they arrive, I need to find some way to get the scratches off the slabs.
Looks AT'd to me......Rarely see the same toning characteristics on both the obverse and reverse. I may be wrong and the coin could go "market acceptable"; but I doubt it.

Actually, nearly all album toned nickels tone like this
that's actually typical toning for Jeffersons, not unusual and not in the least suspicious. the problem lies in the fact that many collectors, yourself evidentally to be included in that group, don't give nickels much more than a passing glance and so aren't familiar with their toning qualities. i believe if you start to flip through dealer stock at shows or shops you'll be surprised at what you find.
Nice coins, Russ. Thanks for sharing the AH Kennedy's with me today - I finally realize why you like them!
"My friends who see my collection sometimes ask what something costs. I tell them and they are in awe at my stupidity." (Baccaruda, 12/03).I find it hard to believe that he (Trump) rushed to some hotel to meet girls of loose morals, although ours are undoubtedly the best in the world. (Putin 1/17) Gone but not forgotten. IGWT, Speedy, Bear, BigE, HokieFore, John Burns, Russ, TahoeDale, Dahlonega, Astrorat, Stewart Blay, Oldhoopster, Broadstruck, Ricko, Big Moose.
I'll defer to those knowledgable with this series. It has been my experience that a coin which is semi-lusterous in the middle, has purple concentric rings along the inner third and toned brown/green on the outside; on BOTH sides, usually "quacks"!
I would still like to see this coin go into a top tier holder in this day and age.
As you wish All of these are in an album I own (maybe not the best examples, as some aren't target toned on both sides... hey, I haven't really gotten around to shooting the whole thing)...

Claus,
I've handled at least a couple dozen that have been slabbed by PCGS and NGC. There are also a couple forum members who have bought them from me raw and submitted them with good results. The fact is, it really isn't all that hard to find nickels that look like this while scrounging through albums, books and boxes at shows. I picked up two more today.
The only nickel close to the subject coin of the thread is the last one and I really doubt it would be slabbed by a top-tier company in this day and age.

Claus--I'll put 999:1 odds that it gets in a holder. They're are plenty of like-toned coins around. It's from an album. As are the ones in my album, which I guarantee will certify, as is the one below, which is toned just like my 54-S (the one below I sold)
Claus: All four of the coins I posted above, although two lack reverse images, have similar toning schemes on both sides ... the 1954, in fact, is even more spectacular on the reverse ...

Please post a few so those of us "album toned ignorant" can get accustomed to this characteristic.

Nice Bull's Eye Toning >>
But that coin is:
A- not a nickel
B- toned more vibrant colors
C- More splotchy and obviously a heat/chemical job
To me, that half can't be compared to a nickel
