Hmm. I sold a purty shilling from the Everett hoard to Joe a while back. And Don got the key date shilling.

I don't have any South African coins lef-

Oh! Wait! Yes I do! A new addition I should see any day now!

Daaaang, did you show off that Purple People Eater when we were in Florida? image

  • This is pretty cool for a bronzed copper proof.

In 1923 the proof set box lid contained a thin piece of teak wood lined in white felt. I have a hunch that the teak along with the mint darkening produces this platinum like toning. Just a hunch. image

What got you started on South African coins, Terry?

I've been there, BTW. South Africa, that is. Cape Town, Durban, and Port Elizabeth.

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

  • I think Joe gave me a 1/2d once and I fell for the reverse. image That's all it took.

I did have that purple/green 1d at FUN, but I think you were busy on the deck smashin' slabs. image

Do you have a '43 penny or halfpenny, shep?

The ship on the British halfpenny was supposedly Drake's Golden Hind, right? So what historical ship does the one on the South African coins portray, if any?

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

  • Just one more from me and i'll stop. From a '55 proof set off ebay, this is a monster in person.

  • I believe the ship is Van Riebeck's Dromedaris, with which he founded Capetown.
