Crack or Crossover?

Just bought some SGC cards. They are all SGC 96. I want them to grade PSA 9. Should I crack them out and submit, or go for Crossover service? Need advice, since I have very little experience with other grading companies.

Thanks guys.

I'd cross them first assuming the centering looks good enough since I feel SGC is weak in that area. If that doesn't work out and you strongly feel they're 9's than I'd consider cracking them.

One other thing to consider is the cost. Crosses cost $10. If your cards are modern you may want to crack them yourself so you can submit at a lesser charge.

Good point on the fees. They qualify for the current 5 dollar set registery special. That means crack and submit for half price.image

The shipping fees to PSA will also be lower if the cards are not in plastic slabs, but merely Cardsaver ones.

    Rob,

I am going to submit 25 SGC's 72's on the set registery 5 of them are 96's. Let me know how you fare and I will let you know. I too am hoping for a 9 or two. I am just going to cross them not crack them. I am always afraid I will harm the card or that some schmuck grader will send them back lower than SGC. At least slabbed I can resell them on ebay.

I had some success at submitting SGC 92's and 96's to PSA.
In general, it was like any submission - some were surprisingly good, some
    bad.

    I got some 96's and some 92's to cross to a 9; other 96's with a specified mingrade 9
didn't get it, some 88's got an 8; some didn't. Even tried to see if some 86's would get an 8 but no luck there:

    # player and submitted grade min grade received grade or NO if they wouldn't give it

    108 Alex Johnson SGC92 8 8
120 Floyd Robinson SGC 96 9 NO (and only got $28 bid as a 96, card is about 60/40 both ways so....
    140 Willie Stargell SGC 86 8 NO
    180 Curt Blefary SGC92 8 8
    276 Bruce Brubaker SGC 96 9 9
    277 Steve Whitaker SGC 92 9 9
    331 Joe Foy SGC 88 8 no
    389 Al Dark SGC 96 9 9
    449 Orlando Pena SGC 92 9 9
    516 Giants Team SGC 88 8 no
    522 John Stephenson SGC 88 8 8
    524 Felix Mantilla SGC 88 8 8
    526 Tigers Rookies SGC 88 8 no
558 Mark Belanger Rookie SGC 92 9 no
    585 Wally Bunker SGC 92 9 no
    590 Pete Richert SGC 88 8 8
    595 Cookie Rojas SGC 86 8 no
    597 Ted Abernathy SGC88 8 8

one conclusion "no way" an 86 will cross to an 8.

this is where SMR is useful - if the typical price for a graded card is less than it costs to get it
graded, don't submit, just put a bunch together in an auction ungraded. Though that
may be more of a reply to a different thread.

I've had good luck with vintage football (60's) SGC 96's crossing to PSA 9's on a regular basis. Only had one drop to an 8. All were submitted without cracking open.
