Ouch. Sounds painful.

That's a very nice coin. I think it probably is a full EF, though it's hard to say from the pic. Probably conservatively graded.

How common are these coins? I don't know, but this coin is an exceptionally wonderful example. Well struck, unbent, not damaged. And what a beautiful old patina!! How many of those exist? I doubt very many.

Did anyone notice the Thaler for sale as well? The one of the Teutonic Knights? It's pretty nice. Aren't those knights the same who invaded Poland and were a nuisance for a couple centuries before being kicked out at the Battle of Grunwald in 1410?

Actually Cnut pennies are quite common in high grades. There a hoard of them found one time. I forget when, where, and by whom, but I'm sure Aethelred would know.

I don't recall the exact hoard, but the market has been flooded with them over the last two or three years. I thought the market had recovered a bit though as we sold our last one a few months ago (not for $375, but definitely not for $275 which I think is what we paid). Got a link to that HJB piece, ajaan? I'm betting it doesn't come with that great collection toning, but would be curious to see what it looks like.

I still like the linked coin much more than the ones for sale by HJB. In fact, it looks like it's not from the hoard, but rather from a very old collection. Just look at the black layered patina! I like it.

Jester, I have to agree with you; the linked coin with that gorgeous patina is much nicer than the other pieces. I also prefer the rim condition and overall eye appeal of the toned one. The choice may simply come down to the buyers preference of lightly vs heavily toned...
Staples is not shy with their BIN prices but if Josh was able to move one for over $275, say $295-$315, if a collector is trying to find that particular look why he might go $330-$350 so how far off is Staples really, 10%, 15%?

The eye appeal is definitely part of the equation. Despite the supposed "mint state" the HJB coins are not terribly attractive for the type. You're also dealing with a difference in type. The "Quatrefoil" type is slightly more desirable than the short cross type. I just checked our price records. Our three sold for $295, $330, and $335 successively over a few months. That's why I assumed the market had absorbed the quantity (especially since the second was sold to an employee of the coin firm from whom we bought this group)

ajaan is right that an example of Cnut's coinage is available for much less. But you get what you pay for in this case. While staples coin is perhaps a bit above market, the quality and eye appeal is definitely there and to the right collector, is worth every penny. (pun intended)

The Staples coin is the kind I like to find. It's very well struck and has an above average pantina. If that isn't a crack
at 5 o'clock on the obv I would be willing to to pay $375 or close to it. The Berk coins I don't like at all.
