Bowman NOF Please explain

Could someone please explain the whole name on front, no name on front thing with 49 Bowmans?

The variations were printed on the high number sheets to fill out the sheet size for printing rather than making the set larger with more cards. The background color and size of the picture changed as well.

David I have #131, 139, 140, 144, 194 all with Name on Front, are they tougher than without the name? Did those numbers come without the name?

Those aren't variations. That's the only way they came. The variation cards are #'s 4, 83, 85, 88, 98 (Name on front) and 109, 124, 127 and 143 (Printed name on back instead of signature). #145 is the start of the high numbers. I'm not really sure what the boys in Philadelphia were thinking on the inconsistency in formatting that you are describing, though.

Some more interesting (or maybe not so interesting) facts about this set:

1. Most backgrounds on the lower numbered cards are bring colors (red, blue, orange), later series used pastel shades
2. Cards 109-240 all have player names on the front
3. Backs also carry a difference in variations: 109-240 had the player's facsmilie autograph on the back while the earlier series didn't.

To round out the 5 -7th series, Bowman printed a dozen cards from its earlier series but made visible changes:

4,78,83,85,88,98 were printed with the names on the front
109,124,126,127,132,143 had the name changed on the back facsimile to print.

Noteworthy cards:
1. 240: wrong photo of Norman "Babe" Young actually depicts Bobby Young, a St. Cardinal rookie. Babe's middle name was Robert so that's how they probably got it mixed up. The strange thing is, the player on the front has a NY Yankee uniform on... neither played for the Yankees...

2. 4 - Gerry Priddy. Uncut original sheets (36 cards each) Bowman held back #4 to keep kids from making it too easy to put together 'sets' right away. They inserted #73 Billy Cox instead. They inserted #4 later on.
