The only reasonably current price guide that I know of is the Top100 Value-guide produced by Mike Fey of RCI. He monitors attributed Top100 auctions (primarily the major auctions) and posts a quarterly value guide. Check Vam website for contact info.

At the begining of each date in the Vam book they tell you which ones carry the best premium if any premium at all, these are usually the only ones I look for or keep--------BigE

My local dealer told me that there is a book called "The Cherry Picker's Guide". I do not have a copy, but I understand that, in it, it tells the coin buyer which varieties are valuable. It was very expensive, which is why I didn't buy one.

Just remember knowledge is king when it comes to collecting just about anything... spending money on a decent reference library will save money over the long term.

vrtech99, I found the reference at VAM References. It is:

"The Cherrypicker’s Guide to Rare Die Varieties." Includes die varieties for multiple types of coins including some Morgan Dollar VAMs. By Bill Fivaz & J.T. Stanton.

coinkat, I have a library of what I enjoy collecting. I do not care about VAMs, so I choose not to waste my time on this book. If you are into VAMs, you should get this. I am also the local ANA representative, and also have free access to their library. You should not be wasting money on something you will never use or enjoy. Collecting is supposed to be fun and enjoyable. Furthermore, your comments are off topic. If you want to make a comment about coin libraries, you should PM me or start a different topic.

vrtech99, I found some VAM pricing at 1878 and 1879-1921.

The Cherrypicker's Guide doesn't have a whole lot in the way of VAMS. Stanton has said that if you are a member here or on ErrorWorld he'll give you a discount.
I use the top 100 VAM Keys by Fey & Oxman, myself. The prices are not current but give you a good idea of value. It's a small book you can carry in your pocket. It has prices for regular MS, PL, & DMPL with pictures & key identifiers of specifis vams.
The site Gilbert linked is a good one too.

It just seems that many new coin collectors buy coins before they buy books and and take the time to understand issues associated with grading, varieties and scarcity... big mistake

Encouraging other collectors to develop a decent reference library is perhaps alittle broad of a response but not off topic.

I have the VAM book, the Top 100 Vams book, and the Cherrypickers Guide. But they all seem so outdated for pricing on alot of the VAMs. Even the Vamlink website doesn't look like it's been updated since 2000.

I need a new price guide!

There was a plan to update the Top 100 CD pricing in December, hope that hasn't fallen through.

You may want to subscribe to L&C Coins' monthly catalogue. He has a large listing of VAM's. It's the only source I've found of prices specifically for attributed Morgans. I haven't purchased from them yet.
