i still use dial-up (at home) dsl at work, fast connection doesnt matter to me unless id be dling music or something which i rarely do..but fast connection is good when sniping on ebay..lol
I have DSL. I believe that I download at 1500K (a bit better then 56K). I can watch movies while they are being downloaded. Everthing load instantaneously. Dial-up is a waste of time.

I agree with Raymond, but I also agree with people needing to keep the sig pics down because of the folks who still use Dial-Up.
I get Cable internet and Digital Cable TV with 10 premium channels (HBO, CINEMAX, ect) both for 55 a month. I couldnt use outlook on dialup, too slow, I wouldn't download music (waste of time at that speed), Pages load instantly With images, So what iif Dial up can Load the page almost as fast, its not the same with images, Its LAGGITY LAG before everything Loads. I was paying 24 a month for AOL, broadband is the better choice in my area. And if you live in Bigger cities you can get private servers to host your broadband for 20-30 a month... Seen it advertised and my brother pays 26 for that in Seattle. You dont need to pay for broadband from the biggest company.
I have high speed cable from the same company that provides my tv cable. It is fast as one could imagine when downloading and loading pages. Also, if you want to play computer or videos games online, you really need cable or dsl. Most servers will kick you automatically or the players will due to your high dial-up ping lagging the whole server. In this day and age, dial-up isn't worth the normal $20 charge most companies charge. The technology is truly inferrior to other options available out there.
I still use dialup, simply b/c DSL's not worth the extra $ (unless sniping on ebay- which isn't generally deathly vital to me...most items generally come around 9304830483 more times). DSL's also not worth the increased security vulnerability. As for DL'ng music, I can pick 100 songs, leave my comp on @ night (I haven't been kicked offline for years) and in the morning the songs are all downloaded. Sure I may not get them as fast as I would using DSL, but like w/ebay sniping, hearing music I got off Kazaa in 2 seconds isn't overly crucial to my life functioning.
As for picture sizes on here, outside of pictures of cards (this is a sports forum), I'm not really interested in waiting for a page to load just so I can see some snippets of Tupac, some teenage boy/girl, etc. It's not really an issue of download time- it's more of an issue of what's relevant. Pictures of Tupac (one of my favorite rappers) or some 16 y.o. boy/girl= not really relevant- and definitely not why I frequent CU.
When your downloading music at night, your computer is most at risk. Programs search for IPs that are online at the time. Cable is always online, so its best to turn your computer off when your not online.
VCrayguns..im in Bellevue and the company here charges $40-$50 for highspeed..what company does your brother use?maybe they service Bellevue...i checked into comcast..almost $50 month.
true pistol...however i've got firewalls/other protective mechanisms (like anonymizers/privacy guard/etc.) in place to prevent hacking...i've had my pc checked numerous times by security experts and it's nearly impossible to find my *real* IP address...i also do NOT share any files online via Kazaa/ims/etc.
I had dial up back in the day and now I have Cable and I will never ever go back do worthless dial up. Everything downloads hella fast and I guess no one on here plays CS but if you have dial up there is no point in playin as u lag hella bad and cant play at all because your lagging. Also for those people with multiple computers get a router and off one cabe internet connection you can get cable internet on every computer in the house. It really is worth the $50 you pay each month or it doesnt matter when you dont have to pay for it yourself
I can download movies in under two hours, ones that used to take me days on dial-up. Most cable/dsl companies offer specials for the first few months. The one I'm on now is $20 for the first three months and only $40 after that, with no obligations to stay for any period of time during the $20 trial offer.
For some people, there is still no option for internet except Dial-up. Where I live out in the country, there is no cable tv here, and there is no DSL lines. I'm lucky to connect at 28.8 because of the phone lines being so old. There is the option for DirectPC, which is DirecTV's version of the internet, but they have this "fair access policy" which limits you to 168 megs per download session. One thing they don't tell people when you are signing up for that service. You have read the fine print on the paper. So, as of right now, Dial-up is the only option where I live. Guess that's one price I have to pay for living in the country, but living out here is better then living in the city.
Been absent from here for 6 or 8 months, had to get a new PC and with it I got the cable modem. For 23 bucks a month the internet is just a click , no wait time at all to connect, its like now- instantainiously. Fast and always there to. Wait to load a page? Whats that? - Lol clickity click and its there! Nice

<< <i>I'd rather pay 17.00 a month than 40-50 a month. So yes, I still have dial-up. >>
yea me too..sites still load the same (just a tad slower depending on what site im looking at), it all depends on how much your puter is "upgraded"...
