Similar thing happened here in Michigan where a couple would do a scam by counting out money in $10, $20, and $100 bills with some of the $10 and $20 bills being counterfeit mixed in with all the other real bills. Because $100 bills are scrutinized in most Michigan shops with light tests and bill marking pens, the scammers would mix in the fake smaller bills which virtually went undetected as some of the smaller bills in the count were also real. At some point the counterfeits were found and reported by the shops and local authorities were able to track the transactions through store videos of all the transactions by the couple over a 13 month period. They were eventually caught as one retailer realized the bills were fake at the time of purchase and stalled the couple in the store while they called the police. The transaction was for over $9k and the shop owner said about $3k was counterfeit. The couple had reportedly scammed numerous shops in 7 states for over $550k before being caught. It was later discovered that they were a part of a larger criminal ring of over 22 individuals. They were buying gold as well, coins and bars. 😎
