I would have loved to see what this overdate looked like before it was lost and spent who knows how long in the ground.
Even in this condition the 8 over 7 is still quite visible.

    It’s not the worst I’ve seen. Clear overdate and VF details, maybe?

    The nickel probably was not in the ground. Every single Buffalo or Liberty Nickel that I ever found with my metal detector back in the day had a uniformly dull brown color with no darker areas or lighter areas whatsoever.

    Mistakes are natural. But repeated mistakes without reflection are something else. That may be the “stupidity” he was referring to. In research, he admitted uncertainty openly. “If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?” This shows humility. Even a Nobel laureate accepted doubt. That humility makes the quote less cynical and more observational.
