Well ya, have you seen diesel prices? Up 60% over the past year. A gallon of diesel is like 9 bucks Canadian.
Yeah the diesel problem isn’t going away until Russia gives up unfortunately.

california diesel has averaged nearly $6.00 for the last 5 years. my postage for ebay sells are always under $6 to every where but california they are $8.40.
as for canada cad is 9 converted its 6.75 of that 6.75 1.50 is due taxes imposed federally and per province.
The EIA publishes real figures weekly so you don’t have to rely on olb’s delusions. lol.

olb - I want shipping to be less as well, but that doesn't build the refining capacity. Shipper prices are expected to increase over the next 24 months. diesel prices are just part of the problem. USPS just filed to move up the next adjustment to January and to have more latitude in off-cycle adjustments. too the moon!
I mentioned a YOY price, why leave out 2024 and 2025? What a strange range to post, 2022, 2023 and 2026. Those are definitely years but irrelevant to any discussion of a recent price increase.
This isn’t a political discussion if that is your concern. The concept is we all ship and receive cards and both ends are going to get more expensive as costs to move goods increase. That is the answer to the OP’s question as to why the increase.
Also, looking at random year averages and extrapolating a 5 year average from those random years does not equal a 5 year average lol.
Chat GTP has the average 2021-2025 at 3.90. So current price is about 42% above the 5 year average and 52% vs the 2 year average.

Oldest trick in the book. Blame rising fuel prices on a price hike, but never lower the rate when fuel prices go down.
That is true and one of the real problems with entrenched inflation, it compounds, and outside of highly competitive market segments, prices rarely ever revert back.
Corporate profits these first 2 quarters are off the charts, companies are leveraging inflation to add a premium that exceeds the actual increase on cost of goods.
Where the costs are coming from specifically depends on what part of the freight-chain you're on. It's not just fuel, but it's not at all unrelated to refining capacity for distillates. Q126 being settled shows 10% fuel cost increase resulted in a 26% parcel surcharge. The biggest chunk of that is coming from a margin-recovery effort by the big refineries - which aren't all US companies either... and that is a large chunk of the parcel-ground surcharge we see from UPS, FedEx, and USPS in rate increases.
FedEx, UPS have been driving revenue growth, but margin growth has been mostly flat or negative quarter over quarter. That tells a different story than pure over-capture would. What we're seeing in the shipping industry is a trend away from volume growth and towards profitability. We see this in the frequent repricing of residential lightweight shipments where the last-mile cost has always exceeded revenue.
Those are the 3 main things which are working against lower prices on the types being discussed.
fuel prices have little to nothing to do with usps prices. diesel was $4.91 in 2022 and $3.50 in 2025. usps prices didn't fall even 1 cent. in fact the prices went up 25% during that time. 97 years no decrease and then they dropped the price 5% in 2016, no price decreases since on the items we collect. so 1 real price decrease in usps prices on card type mailings. thus its never been about diesel prices.
but the prices on gas and diesel are too high.
Diesel cost is the second largest component in shipping after the driver wages. It’s around 25%. No one is hiding this fact either.
For a long time USPS was profitable. Now USPS loses money. A lot of it has to do with email and Amazon. It used to be that people would pay to send letters. Light mail that cost less to transport and deliver than the price of postage. Now, email has nearly completely put an end to that. Now for the most part when someone sends a package it's much more bulky than a letter. Amazon has also taken a lot of business from USPS.
Saying gas and diesel are too high and Alex Rodriguez cards are too low is kinda silly.
The price of gas stayed pretty flat from like 2010 to 2022. Something like that. USPS may not lower prices when the price of fuel falls. They have to raise prices when the price of fuel rises though. Their whole business is moving bulky stuff. Well, and junk mail. Moving that stuff takes fuel. It's only going to get worse.
Not long ago a can of soup was about 50 cents. Now a can of soup at my super market is about 4 dollars.
It used to be said that when things got bad investors would buy in to Campbells Soup. The stock was considered a safe harbor in rough weather. The reasoning being, people would be able to afford a 50 cent can of soup when they couldn't afford beef and chicken. I don't know if any of you have tried Campbells Chicken Noodle Soup lately. There is like a pinch of chicken in there. At my super market, if you want good Chicken Noodle soup, it's 12-14 dollars a container. Larger container though. Won't keep long. Must be refrigerated.
I think USPS pricing is still enforced by legislation based on CPI. That was the bill that killed USPS in the mid 2000s. Not that part specifically but the funding provision.

Today at the local supermarket 2 cans of Campbell chicken noodle or tomato soup for just $2.50!
